Pretty talented guy in a screwball kind of way.

Too bad he didn't stick around longer.

And his finger was off the trigger until he was ready to fire off the visual gag.

Also noticed. Wouldn't count on many other actors to do the same.

That looked and sounded like real blanks, I wonder how many current actors could do that without breaking character.

He acted in a series of firearm safety videos for kids. They're used for a hunters education course.

Mike Rowe should revive the character.

He pretty much ran that character into the ground. When "Ernest Goes to Camp" came out, there was much eye-rolling. It was bad.

Too bad he had it pointed right at the cameraman at the beginning. But I do miss him. The Ernest thing got old after awhile but at least he made a bunch of money off it. I liked him in Beverly Hillbillies

Says who?! I loved that movie. And when he saved Christmas, and when he saved Halloween, and when he went to jail, and when... [voice trailing off]

I doubt many at all. Jim Carey once said he looked at him for inspiration. I think Carey should have looked harder.

I remember I hated him when I first saw the commercials.  Then I saw Ernest Goes to Camp.  A true classic!

That was my favoritist movie ever when I was a kid.  I probably single-handedly wore out the cassette from the video store.

Years ago I heard Paul Harvey talking about a review of Jim Varney playing Hamlet on the stage. The guy who wrote the review said it was the best, most haunting Hamlet he had ever seen.

I grew up watching him in the 80s/early 90s.  Good clean slapstick goofball comedy.  He is still missed, and my kids will be watching his shows (when I have some).

In a way I miss him and in a way I don't.  Since he passed away my life has been a lot calmer.  It's been years since anyone has hit me with "Know what I mean, Vern" and I'm relieved.

I got tired of the "Vern" jokes about two years into his run and the "Vern" jokes really bothered Dad.  Dad got hit with people copying them from the first Vern & Earnest commercial until he died and he despised Jim Varney because of the commercials.  It didn't take too many idiots saying Varney's catch phrase to get either my or Dad's jaws cranked into a clinch and given Dad's temper I'm very surprised he never punched somebody out over hearing it one to many times.

His other characters were funny as well.  I always found him rather entertaining, and almost always family-friendly.

I remember him doing commercials for Blake's Lotaburger when I was growing up in Albuquerque, late 80's.

Carey should look hard at the muzzle of a real Sten, and wait for the flash.
