The US Air Force (USAF) will field an automatic terrain avoidance system on its Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft in the coming weeks, the service announced in late September.

The Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto GCAS), developed under the M6.2+ F-16 Operational Flight Program (OFP), will be rolled-out across the fleet this autumn with the aim of reducing controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) by 90%, the air force said. According to the USAF, 26% of aircraft losses and 75% of all F-16 fatalities are caused by CFIT.

Damn.

Sounds like there should be more low-and-slow CAS aircraft in the USAF inventory, since they obviously can't handle fighters very well

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Auto GCAS was developed by the USAF, Lockheed Martin, and NASA based on
research collected by the three organisations 25 years ago.

How relevant is this system?  Weren't they still blaming the pilots for all of General Dynamic's engineering fuck ups at that point?
