Yep, says in the article they thought they could get through town before the race went through there. Railroads are usually pretty good at scheduling and timing. Not so good on this one though.

Marathons are generally yearly, and thus planned very, very far in advance.  Whoever scheduled that train to be there at that time is the one who fucked up, not the runners of the race.

The train only stopped because he was forced to, the runners were crossing in front of it.

Then the runners were stupid. Fair enough.

But it sounds as if the train conductor was a fucking prick for pushing through when he shouldn't have and fucking up an event that was likely planned a year in advance.

What was going on?

I had an old lady bitch at me while I was doing traffic for a race since I wouldn't let her drive down the street while there were runners still on it. I pretty much ignored her except to not let her continue until the street was clear.

Basically what you describe. He was screaming out of his window about how he was going to be late for lunch and he couldn't believe they would stop traffic for a race. I guess it didn't matter that the road closures had been announced for a week prior on all the local news programs and in all the papers. Not to mention there were signs marking detours. Fuck that guy.

Yeah, these races don't just happen on the spur of a moment.  They can be an inconvenience, but they give you plenty of time to plan around it.

I do not agree with the idea that it is the Train companies fault. The planners from the marathon should have contacted them during pre route planning.
If they did and the train was off schedule then that would be different.
As for the runners looking like herded cats....... I wouldn't disrespect cats like that

Yeah, how dare they not consider something so important as a marathon while planning their trivial task of moving goods and materials from A to B.

It was. They'll still accept qualifying times, but of course if you got screwed and missed your time because of the train, there's no recourse other than finding another race to run.

If something like this happened to me in a 5k, I'd be pissed. In a marathon, that requires months and months of training and preparation? I couldn't even imagine. What a disaster.

You apparently didn't read the article either.

We get it. You've likely never trained for and ran an endurance race and couldn't care any less about it. Fine. But the conductor fucked up and wound up in a spot he wasn't supposed to be in. Them's the facts.
