Have a wife that stayed home, cooked, cleaned all day for you or one that went to work and made 2x what you do?

My Wife works outside the house.  My businesses are based out of my home office.
Our housekeeper does the cleaning and laundry, and I have a kid cutting the grass now.
I generally grill/smoke something for dinner outside by the pool 5-7 days a week.

I couldn't imagine it any other way.

My wife doesn't work...doesn't have to and I love that.  But, I voted working wife because if she could make 2x what I make...DAMN...we would be livin' large and I know she would jump at that chance!

Wife is at home right now because daycare would eat up a whole paycheck. Once our son hits school age she is going back to work. We live comfortably off my check and side jobs but would be nice to upgrade the house and cars later on.

I guess that depends on whether or not I was able to provide a comfortable quality of life by myself for my family and still have the time to be with them.

<--- never been married.

I make plenty of money so if she can keep herself busy at home that is fine.

The wife and I tried the stay at home homemaker thing for 5 years and I did not really like it. We have no children.  She began to stay up all hours of the night, sleep til noon and become overly fond of white wine.  Had she worked at it and did something to make my life appreciably easier, we could have done it but I felt she was taking advantage of the situation.  It was not that much of a financial issue, we were doing ok.  I got tired of leaving home at 4:00am on Monday to catch an early flight and getting back at 7:00 pm on Friday while she sat around.

Housewives tend to be much happier than women that work full time.
I'd rather be poor with a happy wife than divorced from a rich one!

This is actually false. Stay at home wives and mothers are much more likely to be diagnosed as depressed as well as to develop chemical dependencies. They are also significantly more likely to have an affair or commit suicide than a women who works. During studies and interviews the main contributing factor is a lack of self identity and feeling of worth outside the home, followed by feelings of isolation, and of being unequal to their spouse.

I married someone smarter than myself. If she didn't have a job she'd make managing me her job. Not her part time job either. I'll pass on that.

Gonna go with this also.  Money isn't everything, time together and relationship are far more important to me.

I think it really depends on what a women did BEFORE she had kids. The only times I have seen a women with a career being happy staying home long-term is when they made it a full-time job and homeschooled the kids, cooked from scratch, etc. In other words they made the home their career.

Most of the others either went back to working /doing something outside of the home or their marriages went up in flames, not immediately but when the kids started school and they really didn't have anything to do all day. Cooking, cleaning, yoga and meeting other moms for coffee only takes up so much time in a day.

Voted House Wife.

I have the working wife who makes 2x (actually like 1.5x) what i make. She works 60+ hours a week, hates her job, is miserable, comes home eats dinner and goes to bed. I am responsible for all household choirs, i do laundry, make dinner, do dishes, sweep, take care of the dog, buy groceries, mow the lawn, make repairs, etc...

I would gladly give up that second big time corporate salary and live a tighter lifestyle financially in exchange for having dinner ont he table when i come home and a wife that has enough energy to get up off the couch and sleep in the same bed as me, maybe even a little something extra in that bed a couple times a week, instead of a couple times a year.

Wife that made double what I made?  I'd go for that.  I'd stay home with the kids.  We'd go shooting every dang day.

I wish she made twice what I do.  That would be awesome.

As it is I make almost 4 times what she does.....

My wife is not the kind of person to stay home and housekeep, and frankly I don't want a wife to sit at home all day long.  Idle hands, and all.

My GF of 19 years makes about 5x more than I do, but we're not married and no kids. She says I'm afraid of comitment. I tell her, we've been dating for 19 years. If that's not comitment I don't know what is.

If this hypothetical wife and I had kids, I think it would be awesome to be able to afford to have her be a stay at home mom, and take care of the kids.

If no kids, I personally think it's odd for the wife to not work.  But I grew up in the middle class/lower middle class.  Never seen a "stay at home wife" with no kids.  Both husband and wife worked.  YMMV

If she makes 2xs what I make, I could afford to have a full time house keeper who cooked and cleaned.  So. Easy choice.
