As the title says, lookin for some things to take the family to do while on vacation. We're here for the next week, and have already seen/done a lot of the main tourist attractions in previous trips. Any suggestions would be apprecciated

From San Jose, drive over 17 (heck of a fun drive) to Santa Cruz (where The Lost Boys was filmed), spend the day there on the beach and at the boardwalk.
If you can drive a little further south from there, go to Monterey and visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

except for stopping at SFO on a through flight, I haven't been off airport property since the 90's....but these were some of the go-to places to take
out of town friends and visitors... Exploratorium, Alcatraz, Pier 39, Nike Missile site and the old coastal battery's on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge (lots of shots in many movies from over the years have been filmed here) China Town and the Garment district, if those are your things 
I was stationed at Treasure Island for a bit.. there is a nice view of San Fran from there... don't know what kind of access there is now, with TI closed and the bridge work that is/has been going on. Monterrey is nice, if you can do the drive, as well as Santa Cruz. |

Family is with you. Hmmm...
Winchester House in San Jose. Take the drive up to the observatories on Mt. Hamilton. Lawrence Hall of Science at UC-Berkley. Check out the wind organ if its still there. Hakone Gardens in Saratoga Fisherman's Wharf and the water front in SF in General. There is the Balclutha down there, also a sub and a Liberty ship to see. If you start at Pier 39 and go West all the way to Fort Point you can pretty much spend a whole day seeing things. Alcatraz is worth money and time if you can get out there. Walk out on the Golden Gate Bridge Marin Headlands, Fort Baker, etc. Chinatown in SF is okay Monterey Bay Aquarium. We used to have a membership to it when we still lived in the Sunnyvale/Mt. View. Instead of waiting in line for hours to get in you just walk over to the member's entrance and walk right in. Big Basin State Park. Lots of Redwoods to see. Actually better than Muir Woods. Hwy 1 from SF to Santa Cruz. Rosacrucian Museum in San Jose Alice's Restaurant Of course, Napa-Sonoma. Beringer's, V. Sattui (especially if you like Cabs!) San Gregorio Beach Golden Gate park. Lots of museums, the Japanese Garden, zoo, etc. Ano Nuevo - DO NOT fuck with the elephant seals. They are amazing quick for their size. (Not that I have personal experience in the matter. )I was stationed at Moffett Field from 1974 until 1988. Left the Bay Area in 1993. Mt. Hamilton for the observatory tour - 40 minute drive
Hiking the old growth redwoods at Big Basin - 50 minute drive Drive to Carmel and visit Clint Eastwoods bar the Hogsbreath for a drink 1.5 hours Continue 20 minutes south to Monterey for an ultimate sea food experience. Keep in mind money spent at the aquarium is used to lobby closing off fishing grounds from the fishermen. Drive north to half moon bay and walk with the hoard of elephant seals on the beach. As for the Santa Cruz recommendation if you go there for the boardwalk, make a detour and go to the Mavericks watching zone. It really puts in perspective what those guys are swimming in. I wouldn't even swim in that in full scuba gear. Also you can rent canoes and kayaks right in the boat launch parking lot. If you like calamari the main restaurant has a very delicious snack. |

If you like Aviation and helicopter's check out the Hiller Air Museum off the 101 between SJ and SF! Really cool one of a kind stuff in there.
Take a drive up the (1) PCH from Half Moon Bay to SF. If you have kids hit the SF zoo where Golden Gate Park hits the beach. Take a ferry ride from Pier 41 to Jack London Sq. And back (daylight hours recommended) on the Alameda Oakland ferry. Last time I went the opposite direction it was like $12 round trip. |

I have a friend of the family that has family in Portola Valley, I'd like to make it out to the Bay someday, I have only been thru SFO on a plane change. |
