both guys have a box on the top of the front handguard/heatshield, between scope and front sightpost, that resembles a sony walkman in size.  To clarify, what is that?

looks like a paq-4, an infrared aiming device (used when operating under night-vision)

Looks like an AN/PEQ-2 ITPIAL (Infrared Target Pointer / Illuminator Aiming Laser). Made by ITT.
