that was traveling on the opposite side of major four lane divided highway were the speed limit was 65mph. Some gentleman that thought he was being respectful to pull over decided to show his "respect" by extending his arm all the way outside of his truck and flip my off while I drove by. Lol fuckin' Oklahoma.
Sorry, it's a major divided highway, I wouldn't pull over for emergency vehicles in that situation, I'm not pulling over for a funeral procession. |

Quoted: Opposite side of 4 lane highway? No I would not stop. View Quote Yep. Anything less and I will pull over and stop no matter how big of a hurry I am in, just the way I was raised and what is expected down here. Interstate highway or similar? Not only is it not expected IMHO (with the exception of a major state funeral procession with corresponding escort), but it can be a very real hazard to those around you. |

You have places to be, things to do. Dead guy doesn't care.
Drive on, my man! Drive on. |
I'll get shit for this but stopping for a funeral procession is dumb. Maybe during the times of horse and buggy, but the modern road system is not suited to that sort of traffic behavior.

I had never seen anyone stop for a funeral procession until I visited relatives in western NC. It just doesn't happen around here unless the police block a traffic light or stop sign so everyone can stay together.
In the OP's case I would have continued on also. |
I remember the funeral procession for my Grandmother [I was a Pallbearer] we had asswipes cutting into the line despite an escort...but as far as a divided highway, on the other side...nope.

View Quote I'm sure it's still done in rural areas but I haven't see it in any city in Texas since I was a kid (about 30 years ago). Maybe it's because of all the non-Texans moving here, I don't know. |
If they are going through an intersection I'm not gonna cut them off. I don't pull over just because I see them comin behind me though. I've been in them, and have been reminded they don't have any special rights on the road.
Wouldn't stop in that case. Around here we yield but don't stop if we're out of the way. Treat it like an ambulance.

You're not wrong. Major highway with divided lane.
Hell, even on two lane roads opposing traffic does not stop..... |

No, I wouldn't stop in that situation.

Buford T. Justice would stop and stand outside the car with his hat over his heart. And so should you.

Never on a divided hwy, always on two lane roads. I once ran into a funeral procession going around the loop in Athens that was going 25mph on a divided hwy with no escort and blocked the road entirely, I couldn't exit to take an alternate route or go around them. If you want people to respect your dead relative that isn't a good way to go about it. They then exited at the largest exit off the loop and caused a traffic clusterfuck there as well with enormous confusion as there was no way to tell where the procession ended and there where dozens upon dozens of cars behind them caught up in the epic mess. I may or may not have burned out when I finally got around them after taking 35min to make a 10 minute drive.

Dude is dead. Who gives a fuck? I expect the general public to give exactly zero point zero shits about me or my funeral procession.
Also, its not like the guy is going to die again. I get pulling over for emergency vehicles; lives may hang in the balance. The corpse in the hearse will keep until they put it in the ground. |
Why would anyone pull over for a funeral procession, ever?
Even travelling in the same direction it's not like they're racing to the cemetery and would thus need a clear path. |
Oddly, I got the same dam deal in Oklahoma for a funeral.
Red faced people, 'bout stroked out. I don't think my improvised and spontaneous non-verbal communication made the situation better. Young and dumb. I guess my Nazi Staff Car officer's salute wasn't well received. I still can't believe I did that! Fucking WWII movies. |
I stop, and proceed to pour out my 40 of Colt 45 on the ground in honor of the fallen.
I do not pull over the person is dead what do they care. I am alive I am not wasting my life for someone who is DEAD.
Everyone stops here. And takes off their hat if they're wearing one.
It's not about the dead guy, it's about showing respect for the family / loved ones. Lot of self important assholes in the world I guess. |
I always viewed funeral processions as one last "F U" to the world before they put you in the ground.
That said, no one stops for them around here unless they have someone blocking for them. |
I've met funeral processions on 2 lane highways in rural SD and always stop until the last car with lights has gone by my vehicle. However, on a 4 lane divided Interstate Highway I wouldn't even consider stopping if they were headed in the opposite direction. I wouldn't knowingly pass one headed my way either. I guess it just goes with the territory I live in. Respect for other people is what I was taught at an early age.
If it's going the other way, and it is a major road, 2 or 4 lanes, I ain't stopping, probably get the fuck run over if i did.
Quoted: I will insist on no funeral procession View Quote Fuck that, I am insisting on a procession. A big one. In fact part of my estate will be to pay for more people to be in the procession. If my procession doesn't fuck up traffic for hours, I will come back and haunt my family members.

On a highway fuck no with my luck some jerkoff would rear-end my car.

Watch out. A lot of ARFCOM's entitlement squad comes out in full force when the topic is funeral processions.

When we buried my wife's grandmother in small-town AL, we had to take a highway to the cemetery. Now granted, it was only two lanes, but a gentleman who was cutting his yard stopped his tractor, got off and stood with his hat over his heart as we passed. It could just be, he wanted a break. Most likely, it's because there are some parts of this country with salt of the earth folks that are classy enough to pay their respects to a fellow human being.

no divider on road = stop
divider on road = keep going same for fire trucks |

divided highway... no
anywhere else at least around here its a respect thing everybody pulls over... hats get removed honestly suprised me to find out so many people dont pull over |

When I was in TN on a job, everybody else pulled over in the opposite lane
on a divided highway for a funeral procession, so as not to be an ass I did also. They even got out of their cars and put their hand on their heart. When in Rome. |
