Laptop bag or just carry it in the open. That being said I'm always on site so I don't need to cart crap around all over town. Backpack may work but depending on the field it might seem a little 'tarded looking.

I use one of these neoprene covered things, I don't have to carry a charger or anything so it works for me.
It has something like a cafeteria tray built in so it does offer protection if dropped. |

Laptop bag with wheels. It doubles as my carry-on for trips not exceeding 3 days.
I don't take my laptop off the docking station often though. That is why God invented RDP. |

I used to go through a laptop case or bag every two or three years until I bought one of these:
Timbuk2. They tend towards some serious carnival barker, double soy mochalattachino, I'm-so-secure-in-my-manhood-that-I-wear-a-tutu colors, but they also make fairly plain ones. |

Leather two pocket briefcase / laptop bag. Smaller pockets in front for cards, cords, etc. Lots of room and sturdy as hell for getting beat up on airplanes every week, but nice enough to carry into meetings with execs.

Just a standard laptop bag with a shoulder strap. Large enough to fit a few file folders, note books, etc., but small enough to fit under the seat in front of me.

I suppose my laptop bag is technically a "murse" by the definitions laid out in the poll.
I have a macbook air that I put in one of those neoprene sleeves then put it in a green canvas messenger bag with all my other rocketman day trip travel shit. |

Mine's a combo laptop bag/briefcase with shoulder strap. Zips open down the middle to separate the laptop compartment from the rest for airport xrays.

I currently use a backpack-style laptop bag. While it has functioned just fine, I don't particularly like it because I don't think it looks "profeshnul enough" (not that anybody where I work cares, but that is beside the point). I'll eventually replace it with a leather bag or some other messenger-style laptop bag.
ETA: I don't travel for work, so my usage is just from the car to my office building and back. If I had to lug it around much further than that, then I'd consider keeping the backpack...it is fairly comfortable. |

I carry - Work laptop (17" Widescreen Dell) - Chromebook - Kindle Paperwhite - Chargers for both - Wireless mouse - Extra phone charger - Sweatshirt - Pullover rain jacket - Snacks - Small first aid kit - Pocket knife - Flashlight - Extra medication It has room to spare to drop a pistol in with spare magazines. It doesn't scream tactical, I got a gun in here. |

Work in business casual atmosphere(ie. data centers) daily. Have been through 2 laptop bags and am currently eyeing this. I would stick w/ the laptop bag if I were in a strictly professional atmosphere though. All depends on where you're going.

I carry it in the open mostly. I do have a laptop bag in case I travel, Brown leather with a shoulder strap. If someone yanks it out of my hands and runs off, they won't make it through the hard drive password, the windows password, the desktop password, the VPN password, or the server password to get any good information.
I carry a laptop or tablet so I don't need 5,000 papers and binders. A bag is pointless unless you need a place for your gum, reports, personal water supply, backup food, moisturizer, power chord, iPad power chord, iPhone power chord, etc. I keep it simple and don't carry all of that shit around. |

DaKine backpack. The solid color ones are pretty professional looking, and it is a good backpack. I often use it as my carry on, and I always have to travel with a laptop. I just to just have a laptop bag, but the single sling got annoying.
As long as I am not wearing a suit it doesn't look unprofessional. With a suit, I have a leather zip up case with a strap and handle. |

Just get a leather/canvas messenger bag. Its classy enough, will fit a laptop among other things, and it won't look out of place with a suit.

I have noticed many of the physicians/medical directors I routinely meet with are now carrying their stuff in backpacks, but most the administrators, CEOs, and mucky-mucks still are toting a laptop shoulder bag or briefcase. I don't think the backpack looks terribly professional, but I recently used my backpack (a tan Kelty I use for day hiking trips) to carry extra stuff I had for a meeting and man, it was so far superior and functional than my laptop shoulder bag. |
