Have a Melnor.
The thing won`t work well in the forward and reverse mode.
Do they lose a seal or something making them sporadic?

You're going to have to be a bit more specific then that

If its a rotor, sounds like the gears are stripped. Time for a new one.

Seals going bad are usually determined by the head sticking up or leaking around the top.

Edit, Googled what a Melnor is, but still think the gears are shot

It`s one of those oscillating sprinklers. It is getting choosy about when it wants to oscillate.

I guess it is getting old like me.

Rotor head?

Most likely the plastic gears are stripped. IF you can find the same head in the store you can usually leave the casing in the ground and just swap the internals.

Are repair parts available?
I am sure the thing is at least 5 years old.

Dunno, in my experience not likely

Dig it up, unscrew it, get a replacement, screw it on then use the instructions that came with it to set it up. It's really easy.

It isn`t a pop up sprinkler.

It is one that looks like a horizontal cylinder with 3 width controls on either side to determine the width of water spray. One also has the choice of how much range of forward and backwards motion one needs.

Like one that connects to a garden hose?
