career armed robber who had use of three different handguns was jailed for life at the Old Bailey today.

Karl Millwood, 31, carried out an £83,000 jewellery raid only three weeks after being released from a long prison sentence for armed robbery and carrying firearms.

Today the judge told him: "It is quite clear you are a dangerous man from whom the public must be protected. I am duty-bound to pass on you an automatic life sentence."

Millwood has convictions dating back to early teenage years and had been jailed four times in the past 10 years for robberies and weapon offences. He was released on 16 April last year from an eight-year sentence for robbery and firearm charges. The Hampstead raid was on 8 May. Charges relating to another raid, on a supermarket in Stokenchurch, Buckinghamshire, were left to lie on file.

So far, so good, right?  Not quite:
But today the judge, Mr Recorder Peter Rook, dismissed his claims. He said Millwood would have to serve a minimum of seven-and-a half-years before being considered for parole

That is exactly the way it was in the US 20 years ago. At that time the average murderer only spent 7 years in jail.

Of course if you use a gun to protect your life or property you really do get life behind bars.  I will never go to that country.
