MGM Steel Targets..

Does anyone have this particular setup? How does it hold up to multiple hits / rapid fire? Will you knock the target over if you're double or triple tapping it at 50 yards with an Ar15?

The steel will hold up. Don't shoot steel with rifle rounds closer than 100 yds. AR500 will dimple with '06 and above at closer than 100.

I have a Caldwell magnum rifle gong. AR500. A friend shot it with his Garand at pistol distances, and it did make a very slight indent.

So, obviously, magnums like the 7rm, 300wm, etc, would do more damage. But the primary reason is safety. 100yds is the minimum safe distance.

If this is the case then why am I seeing so many youtube videos of people pounding steel targets with an AR15 at 15-20-25-30yards?

I have 2 of them, no you will not knock it over with double taps or triples.
I have knocked it over with almost a mag of full auto 556 from about 50 yards though

Regardless of the steel, shooting a full size IPSC at 50 yards with an AR is pretty boring.

I'll have you know that if I had access to more than 50-100 yard range.. I sure as hell would be there and not be asking this question in this thread/forum.

That targets not going to budge shooting it with an AR. Rapid fire from a 12 ga might knock it over. I think Miculek did a video of just that.

As for distance I've seen some AR500 targets shot from 20 yards with an AR and no signs of impact and others shot at 100 yards with slight dimples. MGM makes better targets than most.

Get something smaller then. An AR will probably dimple the target at 50 yards, but as long as you're ok with that then it'll still last a long time.

.223 I wasn't thinking about. Lots less kinetic energy. Frangible bullets okay I think. FMJs watch out for the jackets coming back at you.

If the steel is tilted down at the bottom as it should be you are okay.

I have that target...it's been a great target. I bought mine from MGM for $200 shipped a few years ago. MGM was at the Great Outdoors Show in Feb and they offered me the same price.

I want to pick up a few more of those targets.

To answer your OP...I doubt it would knock over the target...that steel isn't light. I just don't shoot the targets under 100 yards as I feel it's a waste of my training.

You will be fine, the only time I knocked one over was with a 12ga slug at 50 yards during a match.
