So...we had a bit of a fuck up.
Me and my dad were out flying around in our Maule, and we came back in to land at the grass strip on our farm. As we came in, we got hit by a downdraft right as we were about to touch down (FYI, possibly the worst time to get a downdraft.) We came down hard, the landing gear pancaked and the plane ended up on its belly. The prop struck the ground, throwing dirt everywhere, but it didn't catch and flip us (Thank god) We slid about 50 yards and came to a stop. We were both unhurt, aircraft held up surprisingly well. We don't think the frame was bent, but the antennas are trashed, the landing gear is of course ka-put, prop is bent to hell, and the engine will need an inspection and likely a rebuild. From my estimates thats around 15-30k. On the bright side, we weren't injured, and It had just rained yesterday so the ground was soft, minimizing the damage. |

uhh....we'll be needing pics of this immediately
oh yeah..glad you are safe |

Sounds like you had a very CHEAP day. Funerals are expensive. Glad you're ok.

good news is you might be able to recover some of that money with those new dimonds you just made

That sucks about the damage, but IMO, you had a very good day. I'm glad neither of you were injured.

I don't believe in luck, but you may want to buy a lotto ticket today.
Very glad you guys are ok! The plane can be fixed. |

A reminder of the surprises that can await us in our chosen hobby (or vocation). Glad you are OK. Airplanes are easy to fix/replace. You & your father, not so much.

Damn! Glad you guys are unhurt. Maules are some of my favorite GA aircraft.

Glad you and your dad are ok!
I totaled my 140 in 1980 and was thinking I was having a real bad day. Before the day was over, 2 additional light plane crashes took 4 lives. Still sucks though...... |
|
That's going to take some time to buff out.
Glad your Father and yourself came out unscathed. |

I guess if your going to crash, that's the way to do it. Could have been a lot worse.

Heck of a landing man, glad youre ok.
Flying is def way to expensive of a hobby for me though. Not sure how you cover than $15-30k but thats a machine gun right there! |

Glad you are ok! Downdrafts are scary especially when you are close to the ground and near stall.
Post this on AOPA so the experts can tell you how it's all your fault. Pilot boards are somehow worse than gun boards. |

its a great day anytime you walk away
but yeah, I believe prop strikes require complete teardown and rebuild/inspection |

I say. This reminds of the time when the gold plating on my steering wheel began to rub off. It's a shame when nice things look like they were used by common people.
|
|
look at the bright side....
your alive and survived a crash landing. |
|
Wow, glad you guys are OK! Sorry about the plane, I hope insurance comes through for you.
Don't let it scare you away from aviation. Use the opportunity to learn about what went wrong. Mid day thermal in a short field? Low AOA to compensate and then hit the back side right before touchdown? Whatever it was, understand it and become an even better pilot |
