Good engine. Coil packs and spark plugs need replacement sometimes. Early models might spit plugs, later models won't. Transmission is the weaker point. Mileage is bad but not like a 454.

I got around 7-9 mpg city and 11-14 mpg hwy. (2008 F250 V10)

I have a 02 F-250 with the 6.8L V-10. But its only got 40k on it. the mileage isn't as bad as some say, it averages about 13 MPG towing 8000lbs.
Pretty solid engine, but I guess I have no experience with them after 100k. |

The Triton V10's are very nice engines. Powerful and very reliable.
They are NOT like the old big-blocks of the day that chug along. Modern engines like to rev higher to build power. They get a bad rep because people don't understand that a modern engine likes to run at 3500-4000RPM to build power while towing, instead of the 2000-2500RPM of the old engines. Most people don't understand this. If you are not towing with it...just ignore everything above

With the cost of diesel being cheaper than gas, I'd go with the diesel... hell even if the diesel was more I'd still go that route... gets much better mpg's, much better engine life, much better resale.

You will be able to watch the gas gauge move. You will also find they are super fucking weak on the power output. I wouldn't take a free one, let alone spend money on one. YMMV

I'd at least wait a week or two.
If things play out like it looks like they're gonna in Iraq, the price of gas is gonna go up significantly, which is probably gonna either A. Make you not want the gas-guzzling behemoth; or B: Drive the price of said behemoth down ever further. |

I know at least two people towing 7-9k enclosed race trailers with them. They are a big box F250, so lots of stuff interchanges. The 2v V10 is a good motor, and I have the 3v version in my motorhome.
As a DD, probably not. For towing, FO.

I had a V10 Excursion, and loved it.
The wife wanted a Mercedes 450 so I sold my Excursion and I have missed it ever since. I got 13-14 on the highway and it would hold 6 guys and fishing gear. My son and I could load our hunting gear, coolers and still have room left over. put a carrier on the back and haul even more. If it's priced even close to right, you can sell it when you get ready without taking a bath. Mine was sold 6 years ago, and they are bringing more now than I got for it then with 100k miles plus. |

The V10 isn't Ford's monument to the best light truck engines, but it does put out plenty of power and is reliable enough. If the OP isn't planning on driving it a ton, living with the 10mpg when he does need it would be much cheaper than waiting for a diesel variant.

Ive got a 99 f250 with the 6.8l v10, and 174K on the clock. runs like a top, pulls like a diesel, and gets an average 12 mpg, with a superchips tuner (came with truck) and 89 octane. Ive owned it for about 3 years now. I really like it a lot, but its definately not my daily driver. Never had an issue with it. (knocks on wood)

The cost of all the big engine 4x4s (diesel and gas) around here are astonishingly high for a trucks with 100k on them. I guess with new stuff pushing $65K, $35K for about the same thing with a few miles on it is a "deal". Who would have thought buying a truck with a v-10 could actually be an investment? Strange times we are living in.

We had one at a car svc co I used to work for.
Black, tan leather interior, RWD, v10. I think it was an 02 or so, but it was mint, and the boss got a smoking deal on it. Rode like shit compared to the Escalades and Navigators. That truck might as well have had a pilot light .
