We have never been to Vegas. We are mid 30's with a 5 year old boy and 14 year old girl. Where would you recommend we stay and find the best deals?

Gambling is not very high on the list mostly just want to see some attractions and experience the atmosphere and lights.

Thanks for any tips.

Bunny Ranch should have a family discount.

Try the MGM Resort website. You may be able to find a decent package deal there. Try to stay at one of the newer places, they are worth the extra $20-30 per night in most cases. You may be able to find a package with a daily free meals or something, that can add up quick. Make sure you take a trip out to the Pro Gun Club in Henderson near the dam.

I would recommend against going to Vegas with children. Having said that, I highly suggest you don't stay at the older, cheaper dumps. Vdara would be perfect for a family. No casino, no smoking, and all the rooms have a kitchenette. November should allow for good rates since that time of year isn't too busy for Vegas. I don't know about packaged deals, Often you can find just as good or better deals buying plane tickets and booking a hotel separately. If you book the hotel by itself, keep checking as rates change you can always call back and get the cheaper rate if you booked before. Vdara.com

If its anything like the one on Reno 911, have 911 on speed dial for false advertising.

Stay OFF the strip with kids at night time (walking). If going to a hotel for a show or dinner/buffet, drive and park in the garage. I would look at some of the off Strip property's and rent a car. Look at the Red Rock or Green Valley Stations.
Take the kids to do some things off the strip like hiking at Red Rock, the damn Dam tour at Hoover Dam. While at the damn (near lake), you can rent a boat for 3 hours. There's also a paddle boat tour you can take at the lake. If the younger one stayed with grandma/grandpa, that would open up some more stuff to do like the Sky Shot ride on the top of the Stratosphere and maybe zip lining in Boulder City. There is Bonnie Springs/Old Nevada (in Red Rock) with a petting zoo and a old west gun fight every hour or so. You can also make the run down to Disney Land for a day, its only 4ish hours away (depending on how long your stay in Vegas is). Also make a trip to Circus Circus. They have a indoor theme park with some "kiddie" rides for the 5yr old and your wife can hang out with the 5yr old while you and the 14yr old ride the roller coaster.  Find some short (5yr old) hiking trails up in Mt Charleston. It will be chilly so you'll need jackets.
Some of the hotel's have a "kids zone" where you can drop off the kids for a hour or so (It's like Chuck E Cheese, but with out the pizza), if you guys want to play a couple of hands of poker/black jack.

There is 4 or 5 days worth of stuff to do with the kids if you look around.....

<Edit> I almost forgot about going downtown off Fremont, walking the back alleys and letting your kids kick bums while they sleep. That ALWAYS a blast!

My recommendation is somewhere other than Vegas for your family vacation. There are so many places that are better for families, why take them to Vegas?

If you aren't into gambling or expensive as hell food or expensive as hell shows,  I would go someplace else.

I used to be into gambling (poker and some blackjack) and when we went, I rarely played cards because I live near the MS coast and the gambling there was better.

To me, the only reason to go to vegas if you aren't into debauchery is for the shows and you almost have to sell one of your arms to do those.

No matter how dressed up they make the place, it is still seedy to some extent.

We don't have kids and the place got old really quick.  I can only imagine taking kids there.

No way in hell would I take a kid 18 or under to Vegas.

And as mentioned above you are gona get some shit while your there for havering a 5 yo with you.

If you go find the Korean BBQ place that's on the strip. It's fantastic.

Don't take kids to Vegas. Unless you like getting sneered at like a chain-smoking pregnant mother and hearing "Tsk-tsk..." from every parent you pass on the strip.

It's called Kimchi, and it is 24hr All-you-can-eat.  Normally ~$20 a head.

No offense, bro...but I'm guessing that was a few years ago.

Vegas tried the "Disneyland" stint...it didn't work, and they went back to adult themes a long time ago.

+1 Vegas is for adults, my parents took my brother and I there as teenagers and it was definitely not teen-friendly.

My .02.

KIDS SHOULD NOT BE ALOUD WITHIN 3.5MI OF VEGAS!  ALL CHILDREN BORN IN VEGAS SHOULD BE SENT FOR ADOPTION ELSEWHERE!!!

Really, there is a reason why Vegas dumped its attempts at family fun in the late 90s.
Find an alternate vacation or an alternate place for your kids.  A cruise would be nice. Yellowstone would be nice.
Vegas?   Never.  Really.  Just went 3 mos ago. Adult Disney.

I'll pile in with the "don't bring kids to Vegas crowd".  So many better places to take kids.

They hand out porn on the streets.  And I'm not talking, "It's there if you look for it", I'm talking shoving it in your face, literally.
All the resort casinos have everything placed so that you have to go through the casino floor to get anywhere-restaurants, shows, pool, etc.
You will be judged by ever person who sees you there with kids.

I love Vegas.  I will take my kids the day they turn 21 if they ask me to.  But not until.

About the time the water park closed to put up another hotel was about the time they dropped trying the kids stuff there.

If I had kids and wanted to still go to Vegas I would probably go in spring or fall. I would stay in a nice hotel on the strip.

I have been there in November and it gets too cold at night and pools are usually closed.

There are plenty of things to do for the family; though as mentioned quite a few are not in Vegas such as Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, etc..,

I would agree to avoid the strip at night with anyone under 18. We were there with three guys and were constantly bugged by people begging for money, soliciting for sex, trying to sell you drugs, etc.., We only saw security/cops the whole trip in parts of the casino. They definitely need to clean up their act if they want to continue to cater more to families.

And I wouldn't even consider going downtown with kids either. Fremont Street was like walking through a very crowded mall during x-mas. Lots of lights, loud action/music, and the same types of people as on the strip selling their wares. Not too mention it's probably easy to mug, pick pocket someone, get stabbed, and get away with it down there.

I do love going to Vegas with my friends even as it's more and more of a downer walking around the strip; but it would be tough to justify going to Vegas with kids.

Good luck!

The new mega hotel/casino being built on the grounds of the defunct Echelon will include a water park. At least that's the plan.

If it'll be just you and your wife, then I recommend staying at Aria, Wynn/Encore, Bellagio, Palazzo/Venetian only. All the other places are older, (exception being Cosmopolitan which is also a nice place and worth staying at) have less amenities, and won't give you as good of an experience. Sign up for their "special offers" and sign up for their Facebook pages. You'll get some better deals this way. If you're not all about gambling or clubbing, stay in a suite because you'll enjoy your time all that much more. However, even the regular rooms in the places I listed will blow away suites at any regular hotels you'd stay at outside of Vegas.

MGM is nice but not cheap. Hooters across the street is a fraction of the price. The only Hooters girls are in the one restaurant. Other than that it's just your typical older Vegas hotel with a good location.

Try Smarter Vegas for promo codes for hotels.

Don't book your hotel as a flight/hotel package through orbitz or any other travel site.  There is no package discount they provide that can't be matched or handily beating using a promo code and booking direct.  Also, if you book a package deal through a travel site, it will make canceling your existing reservations a pain in the ass if some better hotel offer comes along...which can and will happen.

The trick is to get one hotel reservation on the books using the best deals you can find today, and then keep your ear to the ground up until your actual trip and cancel/rebook as necessary if a better deal comes along.  Get one in the bag though because it effectively costs you nothing when cancellations are free.

What he said.  Vegas is among the worst places I can think of to take children on vacation.  The entire shithole is designed to separate you from your money as smoothly and painlessly as possible.  Of course so are Disney resorts, but at least you get cute t-shirts there.

One of the coolest things out here that is family friendly is the lion rescue near the M.  You can walk the facility for relatively cheap (by Vegas standards), and you get quite close to the lions.  If you want to spend a lot of money you can interact with the lion cubs, if they have cubs available.
