Ok, I've got a couple of holes in my "arsenal" right now. I think a .22LR pistol and 12 gauge pump shotgun should be included in everyone's collection.

I can only fill one of these slots right now, and it has to be on the cheap.

What do you recommend?

Get the 12 gauge.  I just got my Remington 870 Super Magnum from Wally World for $220.  It normally is $300, but they lost they're keys and I ended up getting 25% off.  The 12 gauge is better for killing large living stuff.

Ditto, to what Wave said. You could probably add a mossberg to that list also, little cheaper than the Rem or the Win.

I doubt you can beat the deal I got.

Usedta have a 1300. Very slick and handled well. Never tried an 870.

I got a couple ARs to kill large stuff. I think my 1911s will do that well also.

So why fill the 12 slot instead of the .22?

I could use the .22 to get my kids trained up on pistols.

Everyone needs a Shotgun I reccomend the Mossberg 500 with speed feed tactical stock.

You have kids and no .22 pistol? That is far more pressing than a 12 bore. Get a DA revolver for teaching the little ones.

When you do go for that 12, make it Mossberg. Much better ergonomics than the 870 and a few dollars less too.

Sounds like you need both.  But I'd recommend starting with the 22, both for the sake of cheap ammo and being able to introduce others to the sport.

Ditto.  A .22 pistol is just the thing to start out new shooters with & ammo is ridiculously cheap in comparison to centerfire.  I'd go for a Ruger auto myself because of personal exp, one goes with me everytime to the range & gets pulled out whenever I get tired of being abused by .357mag or 7.62x25Tok.

The .22 would be the way to go for teaching the little ones! I had a ruger that was nice, but gave it to my dad. Like you said, a .22 should be in everyone's collection.

Rem.870 is hard to beat.
If you have a  1911 or glock, why not get a Ceiner .22LR conversion kit.

New Ruger 22/45 pistols retail for $220 a piece with target sights and 2 mags.  Patterned after the 1911, and with the price it seems to be what your looking for.  With the heavy barrel it has, it will out shoot most .45 conversion kits IMO.

I just got the Winchester 1300 defender 12ga. for Christmas.  I haven't shot it yet, but it does seem to have a better balance than the Remington 870.

I went down that road before I got My Ciener, That 22/45 would not run. Tried different mags, cleaned the hell out of it, polished the feedramp. It shot great, but it was unreliable.
I went to trade it in on something else, the shop owners daughter was logging it in, she said:
"third time this gun's been back in our shop, must be a lemon."

I didn't say a word.[8)]

I didn't know about the kids.  I'd get the .22 converson for one of your 1911's.

You bought it used? [:\] I sell a bunch of .22 Buckmarks and Rugers.  They generally don't come back and the shop warrantys all new firearms for 1 year.

It matters on ammo. I'm sure you know the cheap stuff ain't real reliable. If a .22 won't run, we always use CCI mini mags to test.  It the minis don't cycle there is a mechanical problem.

Bottom line is you get what you pay for.  Being an assembly line firearm sometime you get one that's not so good.  Chances are better of getting a good one if you buy a Hammerli but $$.

Ciener has had problems making their Glock conversions work.  You roll the dice when you buy a mass production firearm.

You should get 12 gauge pump.
I recommend Mossberg 590A1
Milspec. if you can find it.
You can even mount bayonet
on this thing.  Hehehe.

Since you said you already have an "arsenal", I would suggest the .22lr pistol (Ruger MkII specifically, or a Browning Buckmark or S&W 22A).  You'll have a cheap plinker while you save up for the shotgun (Mossberg 500, get the standard 26" or 28" barrel then a 20" barrel later).
