Either the % of your after tax income, or a total $$ amound per year. Include things like ammo and IDPA/NRA or such dues/fees, as well as any other accessories.
The reason I ask is that I've seen some guys post some amazing collections on here, and as soon as I see the pic I think ya'll must be loaded. I make a decent living and all, but shit, owning 3 or 4 MP5 variations? some suppressed? Along with several AR variants? That's a shitload of cash tied up in one hobby. Personally, I haven't spent shit in the last year on shooting, except for the $75 case of .223 I bought recently. Hell, I even sold two guns for a total of around $2k, so in a way I made money off shooting, lol. I will admit though that my ammo supplies are now getting almost depleted, and need replenishing, but for 2002 I guess I'm ahead about $1800 after ammo and IDPA fees. |

No firearm purchases in '02 but sank a couple grand in ammo and accessories.

Quoted: The reason I ask is that I've seen some guys post some amazing collections on here... View Quote [flame]Yeah, but do they know how to use them? (and more importantly, when not to?)[flame] But how much do [b]I[/b] spend? I'm embarrassed to say really. I've been laying off the collecting game for a while now - really can't afford any more new guns ever since I decided to learn how to use the ones I already have. Training classes alone have almost ruined me financially over the last couple of years, but LFI-2 is coming up in May. That's $800 - plus a week's food and board away from home - minus a week's vacation - plus a couple of thousand rounds of pistol and shotgun ammo. All in all, it'll be a coupla thou just for the pleasure of being trained by Mas Ayoob. If that was it for this year that wouldn't be so bad - but there's an Urban Rifle & Shotgun course with John Farnan later in the Summer too down in Illinoize - hate to miss that… |
And don't get me started with IDPA State and Regional Championships, Single Stack Classics, and all the other "fun" competition bullshit…
Can I factor in how much time (and money) I volunteered to become NRA certified in Pistol, Personal Protection, and Range Officering? How about the hours used to perform grounds maintenance, build targets, and work the hunter's clinics at the 3 clubs I belong to? All the fucking IDPA SOing and organizing? The time it takes to build targets, and attend pro-CCW events, write letters??? I don't think $10,000 would be an out of line estimate on what I put into this hobby for year 2002. |
About 2.5k into hardware. About another 800 into software. Gonna be much less this year.

Since this includes gelatin work...
I don't wanna know. I think both my calculator and my wallet would explode. |

I try not to keep score. My wife does but if I ask, it will start a fight.
I spent 3/4 of my income on them.
Not a typo, I am a minor with some serious weaponry and no cost of living. |
Between August 2001 and Aug 2003 I spent close to 10K. But I was stupid and didnt save any money. So when a bunch of medical bills popped up I had to sell just about everything that I bought. Now I'm scraping up money to get a CCW 1911 again.
Way, way, way too much. Just about doubled the size of an already significant collection.
Between 4 and 5 grand. And Im a college student with 2 part time jobs to boot.
Kimber Target Eclipse, an RRA 24" Varmint, a J&T 20" A2 on a Oly rec., a reloading press (dillon) + supplies, a Ruger 10/22KT, and a ton of ammo... all in the past year... and I know Im forgeting something... maybe closer to $6k.... Jonathan |
Too much. The local gun shop is always glad to see me, now. And even they know they didn't get all of the gun money.
I built an AR15 for $900
Eotech sight and sling for it about $300 .556 ammo about $600 50bmg ammo about $1200 All other ammo around $600 Reloading supplies $400 Oil, patches, bore snake, etc $100 Not a bad year considering I shoot at least every other weekend. |
jeez, I don't want to think about it...
Lets see... AR50 + scope Approx $3,000 50BMG ammo Approx $1000 1919a4 + tons of crap (tripods, linkers, links) $9,000 American 180 - $6,000 Uzi 9mm - $3,000 Ruger 45LC - $350 Gemtech M4-96d - $950 w/ stamp XXX can - $475 w/stamp .223, .308, 8mm ammo - lets say $3,000 I'm sure I forgot some other stuf... OMG. |
A lot less than I did in 2001. I figured out how much I spent total on shooting it came out to about ten grand. That includes eight firearms, ammo, cases, ammo, memberships, ammo, training, reloading press and dies, and ammo components.
Now that I live in a state where I can pick up mg's, suppressors and any hand gun I want easily and with out the hassle of local restrictions I don't have enough money to buy anything but ammo. I'm planning on making a 2004 a big purchase year to make up for 2002-03. |
Too much, just got married in October and if I don't slow down,I'm afraid that I'll be divorced. |
I am going to school to be a gunsmith, so with tools, guns and ammo I would have to say $8000.00
Somewhere between WAYY TO MUCH and
NOWHERE NEAR ENOUGH![;)] ....that MK 19 MOD 4 40mm automatic Grenade launcher sure took it's toll.[:D] |
Between my STG-58 & accessories, reloading gear & supplies, Glock 36, Rem 700P, blah, blah, blah...I figure just over $5000.
My accounting software says around $12k. 1/4 of that was my first foray into the world of class 3. Rest was ammo, 4 other guns, more ammo, IDPA match fees (weekly), a bunch of preban magazines, and yet more ammo. Fortunately(?) I'm not married so there's no one to nag me about the expense.

[carlsagan][orange] Billions and billions... [/orange][/carlsagan]
Seriously? Probably $3k. |
My GF and I just started buying in August (we live together so I figure it's a "household" expense).
Me: Walther P99/.40 H&K USP 45 Springfield XD-9 Walther P22 Mossberg 590A1 Russian M-44 (Mosin-Nagant) Springfield M1A Scout Tikka Whitetail .30-06 Her: CZ 75BD CZ 97B Para 14.45 Limited Beretta Cougar 8000 Beretta 96 Elite II Ruger 10/22 Between the hardware, accessories, ammo, etc... it's well over $10k. [>Q] [:D] |
I don't feel so bad once I read some of what you guys spent, but I got up to $ 5000 pretty damn quickly and I didn't even bother with accessories (boresnakes, slings blah blah)
I started drooling over the write up on 50s in this months Gun Tests-no way! I am staying way the heck away from one of those! |
I have no idea.
Lets see, two trips to Knob Creek, 10,000 rnds of 8mm, 5 K of 7.62X39, 5K of 9mm,,,5k of .223, 3K of .308, 2K of 7.62X54R,, ect.ect.{ most of the ammo bought was expended, BTW} finished my 1919, tripod, extra barrels... Oh hell, I don't even want to think about it [BD] |
I would guess about $5,000.
DPMS $850 Sig $600 Glock $400 Mauser $150 and tons of ammo and IDPA stuff. Already this year I have bought $650 worth of stuff, (5) M-44's & (2) Yugo SKS's and two tins of 7.62x54R and some stripper clips for the Mosins. |
i got into Targetshooting in 99 i took a break from my other hobby in which i had over 30k in so iam no better off as before .
TS2 |
Rough guess, around $4k, if I include the BRC trip and its expenses. At any rate, I spent less in 2002 than in 2001, and will likely spend a lot more in 2003 - especially if a Texas trip comes to pass next October......
Probably $5k total, if I hadn't been out of work for 5 months (thanks all you assholes at Kent State!) it probably would've been more like $10k.
I definitely have some nice stuff as a result of the money I spent in 2002. Savage tactical .223 w/ trigger job and Tasco SS 16x, two SAR2's customized by Derek at AZEX (one mine and one my wife's), a Kimber procarry, a nice Taurus .22 revolver, etc. 2003 will be spent personalizing what I have, and selling some of what I don't use. |

Didn't spend diddly in 2002. Now that I discovered this site I'm saving up for my first one. I spent around $75 for 200 rounds of 12ga, 1100 rounds of .22lr, and went in with a friend for some cheap .357 to try out in his dad's S&W.
Minor as well [:(] |

Well, because of this topic, I ran a little report in my accounting software on the category 'Leisure-Guns & Ammo'. Damn, shouldn't have done that...
2001 and 2002 were big years for me. 2003 will be about half of the last two years. According to the computer, roughly $15,000 in '02. That is everything from guns to ammo and a whole lot in between. Also, that doesn't account for a significant number of small purchases here and there such as fun show crap, small quantities of ammo, CLP, etc. I'd say $18k is a fair estimate. Edited to add that, the only hard-to-swallow part of that figure is the fact that at least half (but probably more) of it was consumables. (ammo, cleaning supplies, etc.) |
2002: FAL and Benelli M3= $2,100. Accessories and ammo=maybe $2,000. |
I'm sure I am going to regret doing this... if I can remember everything...
Preban Cobray M11 $350 Glock 27 with night sights $450 Yugo SKS $150 Czech Mauser $75 L1A1 $350 Preban M4 tricked out no optics $1,500 Norinco M14 package $525 Keltec Sub 2000 $270 Inland M1 Carbine $400 Bulgarian AK74 $600 Russian SKS and Romak2 package $350 Krinkov $775 Remington VSS w/Springfield Tac Scope $600 Daewoo DR200 $550 Accessories Ammo $500 Aimpoint Comp ML $200 Comp M $150 Comp M2 with gooseneck and QRP $330 Kobra weaver sight $130 Cases, holsters, slings $300 Mags $1,000 I'm sure there is other stuff as well... amazing what losing a Fiance can do for your finances and the better use that wedding and reception money can go to! |
