BSA Scopes - AR15.COM

I did a search and didn't turn up much. Are these scopes decent or just junk? The prices are good and a lot of people sell them. Thanks

I have a BSA Contender 36x50 and a friend of mine chose a similar model to mount on his HB AR - no hang-ups, no complaints.

I have a BSA 3-12x50 on my Marlin 25N .22LR. And yes, I know this is a big-time overkill. Still, [rolleyes]. Very clear, I don't know if they're good for a high-powered rifle or not though

i bought one for a buddy's birthday to put on his .308 M700 hunting rifle. went with him to try it out after being laser bore sighted by the gunshop. he shot two rounds and it was dead on. i shot the next round out of it, and the reticle just shit the bed. it was actually moving around inside the tube. good thing it was a cheapo! he chucked it and we had a good laugh...

was it scope worth it? yeah, the laughing part was.

I bought a 50mm 3x12 Classic and it served me well through many, many rounds in my AR.
I took it off cause I need to train with iron sights.

I have one that came on my .243 Model 70 varmint gun. Seems to be holding up. Hasnt moved in the 200 rounds that I've put thru it.

Bought a Simmons 3-9 x 50 at Walmart for $39.00 Life Time warranty. I can shoot the eye out of a deer at 100 yards.

These are inexpensive chinese made scopes (yeah yeah maybe the chinese make some good scopes, I'm skeptical). Cheapo scopes sometimes have a couple of problems, even if they look good when you loook through them-they are more likely to have there zero (where the bullet hit) change and very often it is more difficult to adjust the reticules, they may not "click" at each knotch/marking and the amount they move may vary from marking to marking.

I have a BSA scope (can't remember the model) on my 7mm Rem Mag (yes I admit it!). It is clear to look through and seems to hold it's zero pretty good, however getting it sighted in is tough-it has the problem of the reticule not adjusting properly as I stated above. However I have put several hundred rounds through the rifle with the scope on it and it has not shaken to pieces.

I would bet that different BSA scopes may be made by different factories in China (I'm guessing) so I don't know that my experience with this scope would have anything to do with the quality of another scope you are looking at.

Deadeye47 has a 6-24x40 i think it is and the optics are good enough that we were reading store signs and posters about 1000m away and I was even able to watch my kids on the park by our house at about 2 miles away. We have tried to shoot it on his FAL but run out of elevation so it needs to be shimed and re bore sighted and then we will put it to a test at 100m and 200m at the range. If he ever gets around to working on it that is.

Every BSA scope I have looked through had a yellow cast in the image, and most if not all of them had problems with image clarity, especially at the edges, but in the center of the look also.

I'll buy a Tasco first, and that will require a drastic situation.

Hold out for an old steel body Weaver or Redfield if nothing else, and buy it for less money (well not less than $39.95).

Cheap scopes are just not worth my trouble, but I believe that everyone ought to just shoot whatever makes them happy.

BTW, S-Wolfe, I have a 6-24X50 scope on a .22 rimfire rifle - it'll shoot the eye out of squirrel at 50 yards. I'm thinking about upgrading to a fixed 36X scope since I mainly use this rifle for target shooting.

I'm with 82nd on this one. I own 3 BSA's one's a 3-9 and the others are 6-16 if I remember right. I haven't had a problem with any of them, and I'm looking to buy another one. Hell they have a lifetime warranty if anything goes wrong. Oh, btw I ordered mine through Cheaper Than Dirt.

Forgot to add. The 3-9 is on a ruger 10-22. The 6-16's are on a flat top Colt Match Target HBar and a Savage 116 in 30.06. None of the scopes have lost their zero or fallen apart. And I probably put 300 shots through the bolt action at the Hunfarm in the past couple days with no effects to the scope.

Well you need to keep the various models straight in your mind because the price and quality vary. I bought 2 Platinum 6-24x44 target scopes. They were so cheap $96. I thought I would sell one but it turns out to have something funky going on with one turret . It spins ellipiticly so the vernier graduations are meaningless. This BTW is just in the cap itself not inside, so minor but stupid. Other than that they are very bright and clear. They have one of those lifetime warranties as well. Dot reticle very nice! Comparable to Simmons 44 mag, better than Tasco target.

Back again . I realized you are not necessarily looking for a target scope.I can't rave too much about the Simmons Expedition I have in 3-9x42. It is amazingly bright and clear. Very good in low light and relatively cheap. Natchez has them at $125 now. Not quite a Grand Slam but pretty close.

Hmmm...why are military weapons equipped with bipods that fold backward then?

Someone else told me the only reason they are popularly placed to fold forward is for tactical stabilization when not being used.

The military may do things differently & there may be other bi-pods that do fold back, but the Harris is supposed to go forward. That would suck as a combat weapon as it would hang on all sorts of stuff.

But it IS personal preference - Harris' recomendation is just that THEIR recomendation.

It's not pointing forward on the Thompson Center. You might want to E-mail Barrett and tell them to mount their bipods the other way on their 50cals if it makes that much of a differance. I'm sure I'd want to lean into a 50bmg more than I would my 30.06.

If you decide to save some money and go with a used 36x fixed, I have a newer T-series Weaver with the Micro-Trac adjustments, standard target turrets and optional bench rest knobs,
sunshade, screw in metal lens caps, and a fine crosshair. It is in excellent shape. Have all the original packaging and information that came with the scope. I live in the St. Louis area.

A couple years ago a friend and I both bought a BSA Contender 4-16x40 target scope.. In general clarity was decent but they weren't very bright.. and had a problem focusing on small targets past about 100 yards. (had an AO by the way) Mine held up for a while but one day I noticed the reticle had turned about 15-20 degrees.. I sent it back and they sent me a new one.. but that one was even worse in the focusing department than the original.. and I didn't trust it.. so I sold it and decided I'd never buy a cheap scope again.. Soon after I got rid of mine my friend complained that his scope had shit the bed, not sure what exactly it was that happened though.

I'm hooked on the Nikon Monarch series of scopes.. Excellent glass at a good price. They're certainly not cheap though, but in the world of optics you get what you pay for. [:)]

For the price the BSA scopes are good, But remember you get what you pay for!
Next time you are in a good gun store have a look through a Leupold Or Trijicon, The difference in quality from the cheap scopes is amazing!

82ndAbn: Don't feel bad, I turned the mount around on my Versa-Pod. The legs actually fold either way, but normally the mount points forward. I have found that if I point it backwards I can get on target faster.
