In an experiment, a 180 gr. bullet was fired straight up and upon landing made a 1/16" dent in a pine board. Bullets fired straight up are not especially dangerous. An object weighing only 1 or 2 ounces falling from even a very great height can only gain a limited amount of energy. Its terminal velocity will be around 140 mph and no more. The problems arise when a bullet is fired in a more horizontal direction, at ,say, 30 degrees. Then the bullet will travel much farther and retain much more of its initial muzzle velocity. Of course, most of the yahoos who fire into the air do not fire straight up.

I heard LAPD cops park under overpasses at midnight to avoid falling bullets, but I don't know how much truth there is to that. Tonight was quiet as far as I could tell, a few fireworks here and there but no firearms.
LA County is nowhere near as bad as it was in Miami. Sounded like a freakin' war zone at midnight. Morons. |

Also two rounds of what was either a cannon at distance, or large shoulder-fired closer in. It was heartwarming in a way... If only a minority of gun owners are unsafe enough to put that volume of noise in the air, then my area has many more shooters in it than I'd ever thought. [heavy] |

If you want to shoot a gun on new years just use a shot gun with bird shot. Point it straight up. The pellets fall harmlessly to the ground. I have had pellets hit me while bird hunting. You can barley feel it.
