I've made a few pawnshop scores in the past, but most of the shops within driving distance of Anchorage put astronomical prices on their stuff.
I have a thing for 1903 springfields. It is amazing to see hacked up 03A3's with a 400-750 dollar price tag on it. Cut that price in half, and then we can START talking. Of course only the barreled action is usable. I'm not talking NRA sporters or NM rifles, or all correct WW1 issue either.
I found a nice non-Eddystone M1917 one time with the full 26" barrel intact with most of the metal. The GUNSMITH quickly refused an offer because he didn't want me to steal a possible jewel that might be worth a lot of money. I saw him working on a 338 barrel to install to a 98 mauser, so he was, in theory, a gunsmith.
This was the same shop that labled every military rifle as a Springfield in 3006. A Lee-Enfield #1 MK3 was an "Early Springfield" in 30-06. The gunsmith said "how do you know what it is," and said he was a gunsmithing school grad. [>:/] Dumbass.
I still haunt the pawnshops everytime I am home, but not too many deals out there.
