Yippie! I need a life [:)]
I've spent the last 15 days with my old AR's shooting up the North Carolina woods and building a pair of 80% lowers. My father was pretty amazed that US citizens could legally build their own rifles and that finishing the receiver was so easy - a nice father/son project for the holidays.
My grandfather was into metal working and left my father many of his tools which sure helped out. Found a sweet drill stand vice back in a wooden box that is mine now [:)] along with a bunch of old USA made tools. Dad's past 70 now and his heart meds prevent him from working with power tools but he knows his stuff from back following WWII when his father taught him many skills.
I've got a pair of new AR lowers, a few cuts and scrapes, and some great memories of working on the project. I took a bunch of digital pictures and might gather them together with some tips on finishing these things.
I've put the parts into one lower and it function tests out alright - haven't taken it out yet and given it a trial by fire. I'm calling the first lower "Genesis" as its my genesis to gun maker from user.
The project isn't rocket science but does cost a penny or two as the tools and jig don't come cheap but being able to make my own receivers is a priceless ability. There must be a million mothers rolling in their graves tonight.
