When is this a decent reason for registration of guns, or registration of anything?
Who benefits from this revenue enhancement? Gun registries have proven to be extremely expensive. Does it actually bring in more money than it costs?
And consider this: You can register millions of gun owners, at the cost of tens of millions of dollars, but if one person who victimizes others for fun and profit DOES NOT register his guns and remains undetected, would all of the time, effort and money put into the gun registry then be rendered completely useless? After all, this IS being advertised as a deterrant tool, a prevention tool, and an investigation tool. The only thing that is needed to defeat the gun registry is a refusal to participate.
And the only argument left is that the knowledge of the registry's existance provides a feeling of safety, which is shattered by the knowledge that criminals remain undetected by the system. Is a feeling of safety worth tens of millions of dollars, when considering the fact that those who want to victimize YOU are still free to ply their criminal trade?
That's the flip side to the "If it just saves one life, it's worth it" argument. What do ya think? [;)]
