Who makes a good carb for a truck? My '82-k10 needs one.  I am sort of making it into an bit of an off-roader is the problem. So since I can't afford any type of injection or the "truck avenger" what should I buy? I got about $250 to blow. Also should I get vaccum or machanical secondaries? I plan on buying an edelbrock manifold to compliment it.

I would go with a quadrajet if you can get one, if not, get the Edelbrock. I personally don't care for Holly, but that is just my opinion.

I noticed that edelbrock has a quadrajet series. Are they wehat your talking about? Also I have tried to research this thing elsewhere and other sites list the quadrajet as being one of the best carbs there are. why is this? why do some people call them the quadrapuke or whatever?

It has a quadrajet on it now. The engine is a 305, but I plan on upgrading to a 350 this summer so I need something that flows enough for both. The carb is 22 years old and just isn't functioning. I would rather put a new one on then rebuild the old one.

P.S. why did the quadrajet get a bad name anyways?

the QJ is very difficult to tune for the individual engine, and the vacuum/iar valve had a tendency to stick.  My personal favorite is the Carter AFB re-issue by Edelbrock.  I raced with a small block and a Carter AFB, and it ran like a raped ape....  very reliable and worked perfect.  Ops

Well mostly because the people would fuck with them trying to make them "perform" better.

Honestly for daily driving, the Quadrajet in one of the best carbs out there.  It works at odd angles (unlike the Holley and Carter carbs) and is rather fuel efficient and has the capability of good WOT performance as well, because of the LARGE secondaries.

A properly running Q-jet is 95% of what an inexpensive fuel injection (i.e. throttle body injection) set up would net you.  I would take the Q-jet off of your truck and have it rebuilt and spend the other $150.00 on ammo!

Well it seems that the quadrajet is the one for me. I am not into tuning an engine to the max. Maybe a cam cam or something, but I will start my seach for the quadrajet.

If you have already got the Q-jet, then by all means rebuild it and stick it on the 350. It should work just fine.

2nd the Carter AFB - Which I think Edlebrock makes a variation of also... - Its been a while since I messed with carbatutors, carbaradiators, CAR's other than AR's.

Holley makes a excellent carb if you enjoy tuning. You'll have to tune a Holley everyday.

They are great race carbs but they have to be fiddled with constantly. A Q-jet or AFB can be set up and run pretty much trouble free. They are the better choice for the street, IMHO.
