There is a long history of effiminate men in Hindu culture, who don't consider themselves male. This isn't the least bit surprising - I'd imagine the same would happen in Thailand.

So what are hermaphrodites?  Third gender squared?

Considering hijras are mentioned in the Kama Sutra, this particular hit came around the time of Christ.

By definition, hermaphrodites have both male and female reproductive tissues.

In light of that, I'd say they're both male and female.

there was a rash of hermaphroditism in puerto rico. recessive trait overly expressed due to a sorta closed breeding population, perhaps.

they developed a rule - "penis by 12." meaning whatever the kid was mostly like at age 12 became their gender role.

ultimately it was not a big deal.

What constitutes a transgender?

Is a cross-dresser far enough?  Implants/hormones to grow tits?

A male that wants to adopt a female role, or vice-versa.

I'm not really sure why it matters, honestly.

Well that's retarded...

On the one hand we aren't supposed to lock people in to gender roles because there shouldn't be gender roles because that's sexist.

On the other hand if you don't fit in to the standard male gender identity then you're such a fucking weirdo we're going to call you something entirely different.

I can't stand the sound of ""Cisgendered" either, but what's "normal" anyway?

We aren't talking about the LGBT crowd in the US here - we're talking about a caste in India that has existed for thousands of years. This isn't a matter of "sexist" or "PC", it's a matter of people getting equal representation under the law.

Consider it equivalent to the Civil Rights Act in the US.

Normal means "typical, average, or expected".

These people are a relatively small fraction of the Indian population. They are by definition not normal. It isn't a value judgment.

It kinda sounds like that's "normal" for over there. India is pretty damn weird in general.
You just said yourself that they were an established caste of people going back 1000s of years.

Dunno if sarcasm or not, but by adopting a "female role," you are legally becoming a woman.

However, I am making the assumption, that there is some kind of process that prevents every Tom, Dick, & Harry from becoming a woman just because they want benefits or something.
