some great action in that movie. I love that BAR!
Another good movie where Steve McQueen demonstrates his firearms handling abilities is The Getaway. The first movie I ever saw where someone did a chamber check. |

From what I've seen of it I like it. Problem is, I've never seen all of it....for some reason I always come across it while channel surfing & it's been on for a while. Same for American Grafitti..always manage to catch the last 30-45 minutes, never the whole thing. I'll just have to break down & rent it if only for the BAR action alone.

The Sand Pebbles IS a great film...and very accurate portrayal of life in the China Station Navy before WW II. Once assigned to a ship in the Far East Fleet, many old hands never left...preferring to stay there rather than rotate back to the World. Lots of them in fact stayed overseas after they retired, shacking up with a local woman in China or the PI and opening up a modest business. WW II changed all that forever.
The river battle is one of my all time favorites. My only gripe is with the CO's insistance to close swiftly and board. I think I would have have layed off a bit longer and employed my main battery and machine guns to good use before boarding. Ah well...hindsight is always 20-20. Life in China then was certainly cheap. |
