DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- The number of children killed in Michigan's
largest city has doubled this year.
The city is projected to finish the year with a child homicide rate higher
than that of Los Angeles, Chicago and other large cities checked by the
Detroit Free Press.
Twenty-six children 16 and younger were killed in the city of 950,000 this
year. Seventeen died from gunshots, Wayne County medical examiner records
show.
"I think for anybody, it makes them sad that there are children who can't
feel safe riding a bike or going to a store," said Shikha Hamilton,
president of the Detroit chapter of the Million Mom March, a national
coalition against gun violence.
"The awareness level has definitely risen," she said. "But the question to
this city is: What can we do about prevention?"
Detroit's child homicide rate is 9.2 per 100,000. Last year's rate was
less than half that.
The rates per 100,000 for other cities, through December 13, were 7.3 in
Houston, 5.7 in Chicago, 5 in Los Angeles, 4.4 in Philadelphia, 3 in
Phoenix, 2.6 in San Antonio, 2.5 in San Diego and 2 in Dallas.
Figures were unavailable for New York, the newspaper said.
"I wish it would stop," said Brenda Logan, whose 15-year-old son Jarrell
was shot and killed November 23 after a dispute at a party. "Something
needs to be done. You hear them saying, 'It takes a village,' all the
time. I want to get out and talk to young people about it."
In March, three days after the shooting death of 3-year-old Destinee
Thomas, Wayne County Prosecutor Michael Duggan announced Project Destinee,
a collaboration between his office and the Detroit Police Department.

The goal was to topple two rival drug rings at the center of her death.
Destinee was killed when bullets from an AK47 riddled her Detroit home as
she sat watched television.
Duggan says Project Destinee has resulted in more than 12 convictions of
drug ring members so far.
After the death of DeAntoine Trammell, 10, on June 4, Mayor Kwame
Kilpatrick announced programs to help end violence.
Six months after Kilpatrick's announcement, 14 more children have been
killed in Detroit.
"And I take that as my personal responsibility and I will go anywhere and
say I have not done well, I've done poor at that," the mayor said.

Detroit schools need to start teaching kids how to hit the floor when they hear shots.

In all seriousness, most of these kids have been shot in their homes or by spray and pray bullets.  There is a problem with kids getting shot in Dtown.
