Should have found this before I spent $450 on a Pro-106 a few years ago.

$14 RTL2832U & R820T USB tuner from Amazon.
Free SDR# software.
Free DSD+ software.

Does it work with trunked systems? Specifically EDACS.

There is a plugin for SDR# that is supposed to do trunk tracking.

I'm seeing Chinese import kits. The CD of software that comes with those is typically full of rootkits and viruses, so I'm assuming the software comes from elsewhere?

This is the exact one I ordered for $21.
There is  a $14 that should be the exact same thing, but this is the one I have.

Yes.    I did not use the CD that came with it.    It is actually a TV tuner for asia or somewhere.   But the SDR in the dongle can receive from 27mhz to 1700mhz IIRC.

I threw the CD and remote away.   The stock antenna sucks, but I ordred an external connector so I can connect it to a better antenna.

Also using it to track aircraft.

Ahh. Very cool. Might need to look into that! Thank you!

Just as a note to anyone else, if you get any Chinese whatevers, the driver CD is best snapped in half and thrown out, get drivers online. The things are generally just virus installers.

Does it read encrypted ones or something? Just trying to figure out what it does that the free app one I downloaded to my phone back in the police academy to get used to radio traffic doesn't.

interesting...  any idea if this would work in the 800 range narrow banding bullshit that has been happening to all the trunked 800's and nextel fiasco ?

yes.   receiver does NFM, WFM, AM, USB,LSB,DSB,CW,  and RAW.
You would need another application to handle the trunking.

Check out the pro-106 from radio shack.  It goes on sale from time to time.   Not sure if it would do what you need, but it does APCO-25 and trunking.    It is  a LOT more convenient than this setup.

yes.    Get a better antenna though.   The stock one sucks.
The only downfall of this damn thing is the connector.   It is a MCX-male.   Not very common.

It won't work on a phase II system but it looks like there might still be stuff on the older system.

A little confused myself, where does the under 400$ come into play? Sounds like you can get it for under 20$ . Am I mising a super expensive antenna?
