12/20/02) YONKERS - Two people are dead and six others injured after a fatal accident on the thruway in Yonkers.  Investigators spent hours trying to figure out exactly what caused this fiery multi-car crash that took the life of a New York State Trooper.

A moment of silence was held as the fallen trooper was taken from his wrecked car.

The trooper parked the cruiser behind two other vehicles involved in a fender bender as a tow truck driver worked with them. Before the cars could be removed from the exit ramp off the thruway and onto the Cross County Parkway, a gray SUV smashed into the back of the trooper's car, forcing all four cars forward.  The trooper remained trapped in the car as it burst into flames.

Witnesses tried, but could not free the officer.

State police say 31-year-old Robert Ambrose of Pearl River is the trooper who was killed. Ambrose had been working at the Tarrytown Barracks.

The other fatality was someone from the jeep that crashed into the trooper's car. Investigators are not sure if he was the driver. Three other people that were in the jeep are being treated at

Westchester Medical Center.
