My Captains wife passed away, and I'm tasked with backhoe duty. The problem is the "cemetery" is 175 years old, and the majority of the graves aren't marked. There's a good chance I'll dig up someone else.

This should be fun.

UPDATE: It went well, and no bodies were uncovered.

Lol and why would your captain want to bury his wife here when they clearly don't respect the bodies?

He's old school, I guess. That's what I'm chalking it up to. He built the pine box himself as well.

They said that they poke the bones back down the prairie dog holes when they bring them up.

It's a family plot, but people bury bodies there without permission. They found a baby last time they dug. It was buried 2' deep and unmarked.

What is the location? This could come in handy. A cemetery would be the ideal  place to disappear someone.

Damn.

Bring a spotter with you.

And it's really very common. The Texas Ranger Museum in Waco was expanding several years ago and while excavating along the bank of the Brazos river started turning up bones. They finally determined that it had been an unofficial cemetery for slaves and indigents from the mid 1800's.

I talked with a grave digger one time. As this towns 350+ years old this was not an uncommon problem.
He told me that due to the acidic soil you usually didn't find much. Maybe a coffin handle , etc.
He said he just made a small hole in the bottom of the grave and put whatever he found in that.
Always wondered though if you saw a gold ring just laying there would you rebury it?

I don't think it's a matter of "not respecting" the bodies.

It's a matter of poorly marked graves, some close to 200 years old.

Under those circumstances a mistake might happen with the backhoe shovel, yes.

If it does, then rebury any disturbed remains quickly and respectfully, and drive on.

I would also recommend saying a short prayer of apology to the spirit of anyone whose remains were accidentally disturbed.

I asked the manager if I could keep any skulls I find, and that I've always wanted a skull cereal bowl.

She gave me a dirty look.

I'm getting ready to watch The Walking Dead. Hoping there are no parallels with this thread.

My church is ~125 years old. They had a company come out and xray the ground they weren't sure about. They have a sign up about not doing any burials without calling the church office first.

Sounds like the cemetery I worked at across the HWY from the Fed SuperMax.  We would be sitting in the tool shed eating lunch watching bones come flying out of the holes in the older section.

It's one of the very few things in Waco worth seeing. But it is a fascinating museum of the history of the old west up through today. I'd love to hear about what artwork y'all saw.

I dug up part of a dead indian once while installing a power line, the tribe was monitoring the dig and shut us down for a couple days while they sifted the spoils for more bones. When we got the ok to continue, they had us dig a little deeper, and put the bones in the bottom. The power line runs right over him...
