Here's a few off the top of... well... here's a few:

* Scanners. (THE scene)
* Dawn of the dead. (take yer pick)
* Evil Dead II. (final scene w/ flying Deadite)
* Maniac (I've heard about it, haven't seen it)

Any other ones out there? I know there's gotta be a lot more.

Remember, it's gotta be a true "exploding head", not just a decapitation, or an "exploding-body-with-head-popping-off" or merely a bullet-to-the-head, although depending on weapon used (shotgun, etc.), a gunshot CAN cause a cranial explosion effect.

Just as long as there's lots of accelerated brain bits ejecting from the cranium in many directions, then it's fine to add to the list.

The criteria are:

1) Exploding head.
2) Umm... that's all.

Oh yeah, Scanners is the ONE.

What was that movie with Rutger Hauer as a Bounty Hunter (was that the name??) and he was after Gene Simmons, playing a terrorist? Hauer catches him in the end and sticks a grenade in Simmons' mouth. BOOOOOM!!! Real nice.

But Scanners had more 'sploding heads. [:D]

Outland

Rutger Hauer movie was "Wanted: Dead or Alive"
He played a decendant of the Steve McQueen character I believe.

Hamburger Hill - It wasn't terribly realistic, but I imagine an M60 at close range would do some serious damage to the old cranium.

I've seen so many gory movies through the years but the one from Scanners was the meatiest of them all. I remember when they were filming it they didn't like how the heads were exploding with charges, so they used a shotgun....perfect!

I thought the FBI agent in 'The Frighteners' took a good shotgun blast to the head from that psycho hosebeast. You also got to see his ghost head go "What the fuck"?
Also the kid in the backseat of the car in 'Pulp Fiction' although I doubt his head completely exploded it sure made a helluva mess.

Saw what I would certainly describe as "exploding heads" in We Were Soldiers in the scene toward the end where the helicopter gunships swooped in and starting firing up the NVA with machine guns.

And although they didn't exactly show it in the movie, that guy in Pulp Fiction might also qualify...you know, the guy riding in back with Travolta and Jackson in that car. When they hit that bump one of their pistols goes off and creams the poor guy in the back seat. As much gore as the wound evidently produced, the head must have exploded!

No, in "Runaway", Gene Simmons is killed by his robot spiders, who inject acid into their victim.

The Rutger Hauer/Gene Simmons movie is "Wanted: Dead or Alive"

The best part of the Head-Blown-Off-By-The-Grenade sequence, IMO, is actually before the explosion.  Rutger Hauer's character was promised a sizable bonus for bringing in alive Gene Simmons' terrorist character.  Hauer's just about to give Simmons (who has a grenade jammed in his mouth) to the Feds.  He stops, looks at Simmons, says "F*ck the bonus.", and pulls the pin on the 'nade.

It's one of the best "Kill Quotes" in history.

Oh, for best scene you gotta go with "Scanners".  It's the standard by which all others are judged.

Wasnt there some scene like that on Saving Private Ryan?  Also, the movie "Sniper" with Tom Berrenger had a nice scene where he shot another sniper in the eye (through the rifle scope).

I think the movie was "Wanted Dead or Alive" with Rutger Houer.  I was thinking of that one too.

Grenade in Gene's mouth being lead around by the pin and then Houer saying "Fuck the bonus" and pulls the pin.[grenade]

Exploding-Head Movie Scene Challenge:
There's another John Travolta movie with a purely gratuitous "Scanneresque" exploding head scene.

Someone in the editting booth fouled up on that scene.  They needed to cut faster between the folks getting blown apart.  The problem was they lingered so long on those guys that you could tell they were dummies.  They see the 20mm lining up on them in one scene and begin moving.  In the next few shots you see multi-second angles of guys standing there and getting blown away without moving to try to escape.

They either needed to do some good jump cutting  to imply the movement of flight, or spend a bit of dough on CG to make it work.

It was not so much a problem as something that just sort of catches your attention.

Frankly, there is no reason they all needed to die anyhow.  That tank hulk was plenty good protection against that 20mm, and the 20mm had a wide enough shot distribution and poor enough close in aiming ability that most of those troopers probably could have jumped onto the other side of the tank and started lobbing grenades onto the 20mm, or putting aimed fire onto it from around the edges.   It was a dramatic scene to be certain, and amply demonstrated the horrors of war, but not quite plausible to my mind.  Especially considering how hard bitten these soldiers were.  They would not have frozen in place at the sight of the 20mm, they would have sought cover and responded effectively.
