I left work in Birmingham at 10:30 am this morning headed home in the snow. Six hours and 56 miles later, I'm finally able to unwind. Much stupidity was observed during my journey and I completely agree that southerners cannot drive in snow/ice.
The only positive was that I finally got to fully utilize and appreciate the all wheel drive of my Audi S4

I left work downtown at 10:30 and had to hole up in a motel 4 miles from home at 2pm.
I have AWD and insane traction control, but zero friction is zero friction. My home is 4 miles away, but 1000 feet above me in altitude. Wife and kids made it home because they left 20 min ahead of me and hiked a mile home. But I have pizza, a hot tub and HBO. So I am doing alright. |

Move to fucking Colorado, 56 miles in 45 minutes on ice is the norm.I grew up driving in snow/ice country but never could get use to Colorado.You can be 10 over the speed limit on a sheet of ice with little to no traction and some dumb fuck will pass you.

5.5 miles home from work. Took about a half hour to make it home, because I stopped to see the girlfriend, then I found some mud on the way home and couldn't resist hitting the 4WD.

I spent over 4 hours trying to get home from my kids' school. It's 8 miles away.
A school bus full of kids spun out making a turn in an intersection. Blocked the only way in or out for several hours. I need a whiskey. |

My brother moved from Chicago to just north of Atlanta.
Yes, his family is used to driving in snow. He said it took his wife 2 hours to get home 5 miles. Wrecks blocking every route she tried to take.

Been on the road going on 5 hours. |

I was lucky enough to leave Birmingham when I did, there are literally thousands of people stranded and it will be single digit temps tonight. |

I drove from ft. Payne to the acton road exit on 459 in less than 2.5 hours. I then had to wait 4 hours for traffic to clear on acton thanks to all the morons who just abandoned their cars for no explainable reason other than their own stupidity in driving them. Finally, it then took me another 45 minutes to get the last mile thanks to all of the aforementioned morons. To all southerners who have lost the ability to utilize critical thinking skills because ZOMG!! SNNNNOOOOWW!!!!!: let some air out of your tires, drive slowly, do not stop or accelerate when there is not an absolute need to do so, keep a straight course where possible, maintain 3-4 car lengths distance for every 10-15 mph of speed, do not panic when your traction control bites, and do not drive onto the ice sheet created by preceding cars when there's nice soft snow on a grippy shoulder for you to hang on to. If you can't follow these directions, shelter is place and complain to people who care.
To all the idiots who refuse to understand the principles of driving in winter weather conditions, specifically including (but certainly not limited to) the silver hyundai Santa Fe that tailgated me up old rocky ridge road even after I motioned at you to stay back and then got out of my car and specifically told you that you were driving dangerously given the low traction conditions, the black Chrysler 300 dub edition that stopped coming down an icy hill in a lane opposite me and then had to be pushed off the road in front of my car coming about 6 inches from hitting me and snarling traffic unnecessarily for over 20 minutes, and most especially the gold Cadillac SUV with the handicap placard and obviously non handicapped occupants that slammed on their brakes for no legitimate reason while navigating the turn from an unnamed side street onto rocky ridge road causing me to have to bail into a ditch that I almost never got out of - I genuinely hope you reap the rewards of your selfish and infinite stupidity in everything that you attempt and that fail as miserably at life as you do at driving. That is all. |
