Not just dollars but actual electric usage is up 30% or more compared to same months one year ago.  Heat is primarily oil so that can't account for it.  No new appliances or other obvious changes to account for it.  We did have a new meter put in about 14 months ago.  Do meters ever read fast?  Or the old one slow?  Any thoughts on what might be sucking electricity?  Electric hot water, cooking, well pump, basement electric heating baseboard units.

My wife retired from a utility company and has always said meters can sometimes not read properly.

She would recommend you call the utility company and tell them about this.

They will come out and check your meter.

I haven't dug out all the old bills yet.  Some were higher during Summer, Fall, but I kind of wrote it off to warmer weather and more AC usage but the last few months have been consistently higher and I know something is up.  Later today I plan on digging out the old bills and see if I can pinpoint anything.

Basement is set a 60°  which is about 5 degrees cooler than we had it set last year.

We had a water heater fill up with "sediment" and it raised the electric about 45% in 1 year.

Drained that shit out, bill went back to "normal".

Actual, and with the new meter they can just read it remotely.

ours has been high as well, i attributed it to the fucking insane cold temps we've had here this winter.  we've had days and days of it being less than 32 and that shit doesnt happen here much.  fucking george bush's fault.

Let me guess, you got the new smart meters right?

People all over the country are learning about the accuracy of the smart metering system.  Some people's bills skyrocketed and others went down.   The new digital meters are insanely accurate and are going to pay for themselves literally in no time.

My guess is that your old meter wasn't accurate.

If I remember correctly, the halfrican said he was going to bankrupt coal burning utilities.
They're not about to absorb higher costs. They will pass them on.

Barack Obama: "Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket." (January 2008)

I note that you said it's actual usage that's up, but I can't skip the chance to quote the tyrant.

You got any Christmas decorations out?

Friend of mine's wife had a deer looking thing on his lawn that had christmas lights attached to it.  Somehow something turned it into an electricity sucking hole of Calcutta.

"Fucking Deer" is how he put it.

I would recommend this especially since your new meter lines up with when you noted higher use. Maybe it will confirm your old meter was giving you a good deal all those years

I would start there, especially if it's an older water heater.  I replaced a 15 year old water heater and my power bill immediately dropped around 20% a month.

Bad element in your hot water heater.

Or you have holes in your well line and it's just constantly pumping water inside the well casing.

Probably due to the colder temps we are having in PA this year compared to last year.
While your heat is oil if you have forced air you still have a motor running the fan to circulate the air and to run the pump for the oil to feed into the furnace.  Also your electric hot water heater is probably running more to keep that water hot.  I know my furnace is running a whole lot more in these colder temperatures and I keep the house at 66 during the day.

Many of my neighbors have found this too. The "Smart Meters" are more sensitive to very low draw, such as LED "power" indicators and such. Get enough of them and they start adding up. You may have for example, an electric sprinkler timer that was never appearing before. Now it might be.

PA also allowed utility rates to increase by around 30% within the last 2 years or so. Maybe 3 or 4 years ago.

That might be your entire increase right there.
