I will probably throw up a poll soon.

Individual
rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to
vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is
precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the
smallest minority on earth is the individual).

Potentially,
a government is the most dangerous threat to man's rights: it holds a
legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed

Overall, she was largely correct in her outlook and I think what we are seeing happening today under Obama is what she warned us about..(the portraying of the "haves", and the contributors to society as evil, selfish and greedy.

When I was younger I read several of her books 2 or 3 times...Glad I did it than because I don't think I have the attention span to read them today..

Boorish, aspie, over the top.  Her entire public persona was to challenge people and get them to think.  But her ideals were ideals and shouldn't be any more
Than pure communism is to a European democratic socialist.

I've concluded that one should not be overly dogmatic because one really should not agree with someone 100% of the time, and really, there's about 5-10% with Rand that I really don't agree with, and based on her whole belief system, I think that's a healthy bit of disagreement.  Though, I find her to be a wonderful woman who knew what hard work was, and honored it as best as she could.

"The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities."

I love this quote from her as its inherent truth completely destroys the Liberal myth that they are for minority rights.

Very keen sense of some parts of how reality might work.

While, completely missing what actually happens in the real world.

No different than any other philosopher, sometimes it's useful to "look at things that way" but taking it too far is often... well taking it too far.

I have one real use that has come from her works; spotting stupid assholes.  The people that bring Rand up in casual conversations not talking specifically about Rand are without a doubt, stupid, or assholes, or both in my experience.

It's sort of like an early warning system for fuckheads for me.

She has shorter ones, like Anthem and We the Living.
I like We The Living the most, then Atlas Shrugged, but could never get into The Fountainhead.

Cliff's Notes for both

As it has been said, her writing is very, very verbose and redundant. I don't think I was able to finish Atlas Shrugged. John Galt's famous speech was dull and drawn out way too long.

Her ideas on individual liberty, economics, and politics are spot-on and her prediction of a collectivist takeover of the US using weaselly "for your own good" excuses is like a crystal ball.

She was 100% correct that Communism was rooted in philosophical collecitvist poison, and thus needed a philosophically rooted opposition - not just one coming from religous folks, business folks, landowners, or what not.

She then makes the same mistake as Marx, though, in shoddily applying a philosophical view to the complexities of human society, to the point of eerily paralleling Marx in using that as afilter by which not only to view human history, but human future.

Atlas Shrugged then become her answer to the Communist Manifesto, complete with a call for revolution of the productive forces of society, and an idealized future in which the state whithers away.

This.
Rand's dichotomy of productive class vs non-productive class is rehashed Marxism, plain and simple.

The productive class for Marx was the 'worthy' proletariat. The non-productive classes were the exploiters (bourgeoisie) and the parasites (lumpenproletariat).
Not much different from Ayn Rand.
