Firstly, you'll need to buy the analog meter. They sell them on ebay for about 20 bucks.  240v, 200amp 4 lug meter is what you need.

After the meter arrives, go to your electric meter, and cut off the small plastic tag that locks the metal sleeve around the meter.  Then turn the sleeve counter clockwise and it should free up and you will be able to remove it.  Then it is just a matter of snapping the current meter out of the receptacle, lining the lugs on the analog meter, snapping it back into place and replacing the metal collar.  Then you can place a small lock on the ring.  If your meter is outside, place a no traspassing sign near the meter.

Why?

Would that also not be considered destruction of property?

You don't own the meter. Tampering with it is a crime in most places.

This is very bad advice and serves no purpose.

We had a guy just last week demand his smart meter be replaced for medical reasons... Right before he made the claim that it was a nazi conspiracy.

IIRC they will eventually be used to bill different rates during peak hours.     With an analog they have no idea when you use high demand appliances.

My company provides GIS to a municipality where we just helped them switch over 4000+ meters. We had some awesome stories. My favorite was the lady who was a "deep thinker" and the electrical signals from a smart meter would cloud her judgement and reduce her ability to think at a higher level.

We were guessing the smart meter the gas company had already put on her house years ago must've been responsible for that...

I know some places will bill you the full readable amount if you tamper with the meter.   Not sure how many kw hours a digital meter can read.

It pisses me off that my meter was replaced with a Smart Reader
a) without my consent and
b) has resulted in a "Smart Meter" monthly charge on my bill.

DO NOT DO THIS.

If you actually make it there. I saw a guy get blown across a few yards and out of his boots unplugging a meter, and he was from the utility company.

I can not think of anyplace it would be legal.        An electrician could probably pull a meter, and out the same one back in.   Putting in a different meter would need to be done by the electric company so they can record the old and new readings.
