My wife and I just started watching Doctor Who on netflix. How has ARFCOM failed to have a running thread on this show?

Ah. Didn't remember ever even seeing it mentioned here. Does that thread have spoilers?

There's been several threads, most end up debating the hotness of the companions.

Yes, spoilers aplenty.
Actually, pretty much any of the threads that can be found will have spoilers to you since you're just starting.

Which makes me ask- is the reboot supposed to pick up where the original left off? Would the first rendition provide helpful back story? Or the are totally seperate?

It's a continuing story, they are all tied together.
But watching the older shows aren't really necessary.
I started with the "reboot" last year because of this thread. And I've followed along just fine.

I'll save you all the heart-ache of having to watch seasons 4,5, and 6....

Stop after Season 3, Episode 3, "Gridlock"

That's really the peak of it all, the final exchange between the Doctor and Martha in the last scene.  After that the Doctor takes a turn towards becoming every more whimsical and stupid, he stops being a complex character that you can give a shit about, and his companions become more and more irrelevant, stupid, and annoying.

Plus, the liberal brainwashing gets thicker and thicker the longer you watch the show.  It turns into a steaming pile of shit, but my wife held out hope that the later seasons would somehow return to the magic of the earlier ones.  They never did.

Alot of actors have played the Doctor, but Tom Baker WAS the Doctor. In the Day of the Doctor, it was like he hadn't missed a beat, even though he's been absent for 30 years.

I saw it at the theater, and the audience went wild when Tom appeared.

Here here!
The new one is so....metro, vapid, arrogant, infallible, and PC as to make it entirely unwatchable.

Although I didn't mind the guy that came after Tom Baker, mostly because I loved All Creatures Great and Small.....Peter Jones?

Peter Davison.

And his daughter played the Doctor's Daughter and then married the Doctor IRL.

Word.  Although I think Matt Smith is the best of the New-Who Doctors.  But nobody can ever replace Tom.

It's a pretty good show, I enjoy it. I can't say I love it but then I've also been told "You're not able to suspend your disbelief enough to really like it".
