Peter Squires is self appointed "expert" who is in the pay of the anti-gunners.  His data is usually complete shite and borne out of the usual irrational fear mongering spouted by the antis.

He claims to be a professor of criminology, but he is a laughing stock and most of the people who do understand crime and know the score think he is a pain in the arse and a useless waste of skin.

I as talking to a senior criminologist the other day as part of my work.  We got on the subject of shooting and Squires was mentioned…..the guy I was talking to laughed and said that Squires was so bent he couldn't lie straight in bed..

Like the lying sack of shit Wendy Cukier from Canada. Had some sort of cheated degree in communications, yet claimed to be a gun expert and led the Gun bans in Canada for years.  Once the registry went she has been more or less sideline, just as well cause it gives old lardass more time at the mandarin buffet to scorf down another 40 lbs of chicken balls.

Good luck with your ban, even some sort of mild reversal would be a good change. You guys had abnormally low crime rates until gun control started.

What an ass:

It will generate a demand, it will generate illegal traffic around that demand – the problem with hand guns is that they are small and concealable and they are already the weapon of choice of gangs members and criminals

So according to the expert the ban has only prevented law abiding citizens. Those same citizens will then break the law once a licensing scheme is created? Profesor Squires is a buffoon.

OP and other UK members,

Have you noticed any increase in the popularity of firearms/shooting in your country in the last several years? Western Civilization is interconnected and I often wonder if the huge increase in firearms enthusiasm in the U.S. has rubbed off much in other Western nations.

Hit but this bothered me:

"Mr Farage said: "I would not like us to go to the American System which strikes me as being absolutely crazy that you can go and buy automatic repeating rifles down at a local gun shop that looks more like a supermarket."

No other western county on earth, is EVER going to adopt our attitude towards firearms. It's a non-starter. We're very blessed, to have the culture (and Constitutional protections) surrounding guns, that we do. As much as we bitch about the minutiae (and we're right in doing so), no other first world nation enjoys the firearms freedom we do. No one.

He said exactly what he needed to say. He's not an American politician, he's a British politician. He would be absolutely eviscerated in the press if he publicly embraced an American-style approach to guns. Worse than having no chance of ever becoming policy, him saying it would be counter-productive. No one - not even the pro-gun groups in the country, would take him seriously.

They have a licensing system over there, and it's pretty strict (by our standards). It's not going away. While we recoil at the very idea of such a thing (rightfully so), it works for them. They do not have the same "gun culture" we do, and they never will. For us, it's almost a part of our DNA. It's ingrained in our culture. Over there? Not so much.

Banning handguns was a bridge too far, and to the extent that getting them back at all is even remotely possible, he needs to be smart about how he floats the idea. And so far, he's doing it exactly right.

If he was an American politician? Skewer the fucker, and make him beg for mercy.

But he's not. So we shouldn't.

That's his way of saying "semi-auto". He knows we can't buy machine guns are the supermarket.

Forget about it, somebody fudged it:

I looked further into it - polldaddy (who host the poll) are very easy to hack with a simple script. I found a simple tool called "flopex polldaddyhack v0.2" that lets you pick a number out of the air, and it'll add that many votes to whatever answer and poll you want.

I think it's fair to say that polldaddy polls are completely broken and impossible to gleam any kind of meaning out of.

Just for fun I added a few thousand votes to the no vote, and we're at 53% "No" now.
