"Mr Farage said: "I would not like us to go to the American System which strikes me as being absolutely crazy that you can go and buy automatic repeating rifles down at a local gun shop that looks more like a supermarket."

No other western county on earth, is EVER going to adopt our attitude towards firearms. It's a non-starter. We're
very blessed, to have the culture (and Constitutional protections) surrounding guns, that we do. As much as we bitch about the minutiae (and we're right in doing so), no other first world nation enjoys the firearms freedom we do. No one.
He said exactly what he needed to say. He's not an American politician, he's a British politician. He would be absolutely eviscerated in the press if he publicly embraced an American-style approach to guns. Worse than having no chance of ever becoming policy, him saying it would be counter-productive. No one - not even the pro-gun groups in the country, would take him seriously.
They have a licensing system over there, and it's pretty strict (by our standards). It's not going away. While we recoil at the very idea of such a thing (rightfully so), it works for them. They do not have the same "gun culture" we do, and they never will. For us, it's almost a part of our DNA. It's ingrained in our culture. Over there? Not so much.
Banning handguns was a bridge too far, and to the extent that getting them back at all is even remotely possible, he needs to be smart about how he floats the idea. And so far, he's doing it exactly right.
If he was an American politician? Skewer the fucker, and make him beg for mercy.
But he's not. So we shouldn't.
