I want an IPAQ but the storage on those things suck, I want to be able to put my MP3 music collecton on a PocketPC and run it in my car as the stereo. I think there is a 5gig PCMCIA one available, but I cant find a palm that supports a PCMCIA slot. So I thought of hooking up a 40gig Laptop HD or even a 80gig USB HD.

Any Ideas for a nerd in heat?

Might look into some of those USB HD adaptors, I borrowed one for a while to use with my laptop, it worked pretty good.  Doesn't help you if the ipaq doesn't support USB though.

I can use 256mb cards with my Ipaq, which is roughly 68 songs.  Not bad and it doesn't eat up battery power to quickly either! (Car adapter also works.)

Using the hard drive would mean you'd need to power it and I doubt a pocket pc could power a hard drive's motor.  You'd probably kill the PPC.

Go with a CF expansion pack and a CF card or two, you won't be dissappointed.

It doesnt have to be an IPAQ, how about those realy small pint size notebooks that run WIN98? or anything else you can think of.

Why not just buy a CD player for your car that can play MP3s?  Or are you wanting something you can easily move from car to car?

256 cards are too small for me, right now I have a Mp3 CD player which works, but I have over 80gigs of MP3's and dont want to drag around a CD case.

yes and no, the most common thing to do is get a PCMCIA(pc card) sleeve and stick a 5gig pcmica hard drive in or the pcmica external hard drives.  some people have also rigged em up to hook laptop hard drives to em.

Casio makes a USB adapter that lets you plug USB devices into their PocketPC devices. The adaspter is cheap ($30) since it uses the USB circuitry already in the device.

Belkin makes a USB PC CArd wihich I believe is supported by the iPaq. Check theri website for details.  They also make a USB 2.0 drive enclsure. Stick a 120 GB drive in that, get a power conevrter for your car, and you can take your whhole copllection with you. Also you'll be able to copy your music collection across the USB 2.0 connection (480 Mbps) rather than an 802.11 connection (realistically, about 6 Mbps).

I've already done this using a notebook PC for the host, rather than a PocketPC, but there's no reason it won't work.

I've got about 160 GB of music files (60,000 or so tracks) so I can't fit them all on one drive, but it's nice to grab half of them for a road trip.

USB2 is backwards compatible to USB1, it will run at USB1 speeds on a USB1 port. works just fine for MP3 playing. dont expect to play a divx movie from it thou, USB1 is to slow for that. USB2 can handle the dataspeed to play a divx movie.so you can do USB2 to the PC and USB1 to the PPC. there are USB1 CF cards out there, if you need help with PPCs goto [url]www.wincecity.com[/url]

I have played with this a lot and the week point is still the software.  What you need is good cheap voice command. Nothing I have played with yet has worked the way I wanted it.

I have tried the dedicated hard drive based mp3 player with a small LCD display.  20,000 mp3's on a 4 line LCD is not fun.

Mp3 cd player.  Just cant store the amount of mp3's I want to have at hand.  Still waiting for mp3 cd changers to hit the market.

Laptop in the car.  No good way to control the player.  Spent to much time futsing with it.

I understand the problem with carrying around a CD book, didn't know if that was going to be an issue for you though.

NoKarma brings up a very good point though; I've messed around with a MP3 system (never got it into the car, since I decided I should spend time working on semester projects, and such) but ran into the same problem; how do you find one song out of that many?  My solution was to step back and think how many controls do I really need, then implement only those.

I ended up only using "next", "previous", "shuffle" (toggled it on and off, just an interface to winamp), "play", "stop", and "pause"

I left winamp's "repeat" on, and figured I'm more likely to just keep hitting "next" until I find a song I feel like listening to rather than deal with being able to play a particular song (that and I couldn't figure out a good way to put a keyboard in my car)
