Never have to shave again...

In other news, Military standards continue to decline.  We have grooming regs and uniform regs for a reason.  Changing it for "religious" aka "Politcal correctness" is wrong.  Unless there is an argument that this makes the military stronger, then this is just more bullshit for the pietry dish that we call the United States Armed Forces.

We had a mess sergeant tell a Jewish kid to "take that fuckin' hat off when you are in my mess hall."

The Sgt. got an ass chewing from the Company Commander, and the kid kept his "hat" on.

This was in the late 1950s.

What is the point in have rules if we are just going to make exceptions for everything and everyone?

Actually, despite my tongue-in-cheek reply, I support this as long as the rules are relaxed only to the point where military bearing and fit/function of PPE/OCIE are not negatively affected.  Walking the walk, talking the talk and all that jazz.

Slick sleeve in army speak means no deployment, not no rank.  Lack of patch on right shoulder.

ACU "Slick sleeve" = no combat patch.

I'm sure he's been overseas since that picture was taken.  And, IIRC, he's a medical service officer.

ETA:

He began his service in 2010 as an Army dentist at Fort Drum, but was deployed to Afghanistan in March 2011 through October 2011, where he served in the southern part of the country, most notably at the Forward Operating Base. In recognition of Captain Rattan’s superior service to the United States in Afghanistan, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the NATO Medal.

Following his return from deployment in Afghanistan, Captain Rattan was re-stationed at Fort Drum, NY, where he currently continues to serve as a general dentist at the Stone Dental Clinic.

"Allows Commanders to authorize"  not "Directs Commanders to authorize".
According to that article, no commander is compelled to authorize any exception.

But I'm sure that will be forthcoming.

I have no problem with allowing Sikh's to wear their hair long, have a beard, and wear a turban/kirpan.   The regs against beards are bullshit anyway.

People wear gas  masks with beards before the regs changed and those who were in before 1986 were grandfathered.  We had a Chief with a full beard on my sub, he had zero problems with our air equipment.

If the uniformity of appearance is that important, then recruit them to special units as other countries have done.

Sikhs have been all about fucking up Islamist shit for centuries. Their religion even requires them to concealed carry to protect the innocent, they just have not moved the mandate up to firearms yet.

Medical people and other special folks can get waivers. That's what I was told when I was trying to get a waiver for my eyes.

There's a waiver for anything. The Navy gave, IIRC, a 70 year old guy a waiver to join up because he's a specialist doctor. And the guy who was the head of some shock trauma thing in Baltimore was still in the military in his 70's (at one point covering a street with a shotgun when his convoy stopped) having first joined during Korea because, again, he was a very good doc.

As I was told, there's a waiver for everything and anything. You just have to be important enough to get one.

1) Everybody in the military is currently following the rules they agreed to when they signed up. *

2) The DoD is going to authorize the Departments to relax the rules, if they choose.

3) The Departments are going to relax the rules.

4) Everybody in the military will follow the new rules.

Scott Airpak in full beard.  Seen it.

Wearing an 02 mask in full beard.  Seen it.

Scuba gear in full beard. Seen it

OBAs in full beard. Seen it.

Beards don't necessarily have to interfere.  The reg should allow beards that don't interfere with breathing devices or gas masks.

The gas mask thing was the justification for disallowing beards, but the reason was purely the brass didn't like the bearded look.

That's not necessarily a bogus criteria.

Why do we have hair grooming standards?

Why are the uniforms trademarked/copyrighted?

So the military can sign up only people who understand what the benefits of having a larger pool are for.

Say you have one slot to fill and two people are applying for it. That's your choice. Now say you allow beards and yarmulkes. Now you have four possible candidates and you have just increased your chances of getting a more qualified candidate.

Look at that guy up there with the beard. He's a dentist. And he had to fight to join the military. Now go ask Dr. Salee what earning potential Dentists can have.

He didn't need his loans paid, he had a great private practice, and as we all know, orthopedic surgeons with decades of experience who want to serve in shitty places just fall out of the trees everyday.

Bull shit. He's a fucking dentist. He could have gotten the same job working the same bases as a civilian. But they don't pay your school loans back for you. Typical liberal shit for snowflakes in the service, I don't want to follow the rules but I want everything everyone else gets too.

I see "the commitments every other SM made are below me"

While I'm expected to fuck some joes up who are rocking a peach fuzz mouth while a mother fucker in a turban is in the next formation over laughing. And he expects those joes not to hate him for his special treatment, And I'm supposed to lead soldiers surrounded by snowflakes who get the same or better pay as them.

Standards exist for a reason.

Double standards equal none.

Doesn't sound like a generic ass dentist to me does it.

Bet he wears a fucking navy uniform properly, doesn't he.

Age requirements change all the time, and don't hurt shit.

You're comparing tomatoes to potatoes.

Call of bullshit stands.

You mean like having a larger pool of candidates for military recruitment?

Nah, that would be silly. All those people just want to be unique, that's it. Them folks with their other religions and petri dishes... Damn country is going to hell in a hand basket! Just like I heard on the radio.

Shit, I will become whatever religion that allows me to grow a beard.

Because nobody else has a religion.

Not breast feeding while walking outside in uniform, marching in a gay pride parade in uniform, hopping on stage at a Ron Paul rally while in uniform, or wearing some special fucking hat/beard. It's all bullshit.

standards changing is fine.

Double standards is not.

My last shop helped facilitate training for 4th Dental Bn-a USNR unit composed of, well, dentists (all with practices back home).  We locked on ranges for them, provided small arms training, arranged for ammo, instructor, armorer and range coach support, PPE, and generally helped them get non-dental training for their two week AT.

I spoke with a couple of them that received their commissions in their 50s.  They knew they'd never retire with a pension since they joined so late, but did so anyway because they had the opportunity to something they felt they should have done while they were young.

It's not that unusual.  Not a beard among them, either.

standards changing is fine.

Double standards is not.

1) Everybody in the military is currently following the standards they agreed to when they signed up. *

2) The DoD is going to authorize the Departments to relax the standards, if they choose.

3) The Departments are going to relax the standards.

4) Everybody in the military will follow the new standards.

(* Except, of course, discipline cases, who will always be problems regardless of the standards)

Really, this isn't that difficult.
