Yup, my brother in law hauls propane and he was telling me of the shortage yesterday. One of the benefits of living in the city is I don't have to worry about that one. But in short he said right ow it looks when they run out they will be out for a while....

Right now the only two hubs with inventory are in Missouri and St. Marys Ohio, and St. Marys is figuring on a week before they are out, at current demand. The thing that struck me was that the bottle trucks are lined up and getting filled 24/7 and they have started to ration. The limiting factor is the time it takes to fill and haul, and it's already at max capacity. The Hub in Missouri is in the same boat. More trucks would just be limited by the wait times in line for a partial fill, and until they can run full, it's going to be a LOOOONG time before propane gets back to normal. I need to do some fracking and get a gas well here... |

Older guy at work could only get 150 gallons of it and I forgot the outrageous price they charged, he is backing it up by using his wood burner and had to go buy another cord of wood.

I have Natural gas. Mainly use it for hot water. Furnace runs on it, also, but I heat with wood majority of time. -7 degrees out and my house is a toasty 69 degrees from the wood stove in the basement.

Sorry to hear of the problems keeping warm-I used to hate the heating bills when I lived in snow country.
There are are some things that suck about Florida but staying warm isn't one of them.

Don't have the $$$ to fill your propane tank, tough crap, you won't be getting any in the first place. |

If you rent or lease it or if it belongs to the company, you will not get a fill from any other supplier for any reason in that tank. |

Quite a while back I tired of the propane games the companies play regarding higher prices for filling rental tanks etc...
I ended up buying my own 1k gallon tank and shopping for gas in August then going for the lowest bidder. I know that doesn't help now but it's something to think about next summer. Good luck |

Talked to my bud again, and he was on the way back to Ohio from delivering to Hamilton Farm Bureau/CHS energy here in Mich. Hamilton is getting orders from the regional distributors in Vt. and Maine...Not enough trucks to keep up and they are out, and behind on keeping up with emergency fills already. That's an 800 mile run each way, and empty on the return leg, and they were willing to pay. Keep a guard on the firewood stacks.

Local co-op driver claims Canada is slowing down shipments into US because of the Keystone pipeline deal. Says there's empty rail cars and storage facility in ND that hasn't had propane in weeks. So glad I switched to wood this winter. I was burning 250 gallons a month when it was super cold out.

The rail costs for everything but oil, jacks the end price of Propane to the point they are better off loading it on a freighter to europe. We can thank Warren Buffets sweet deal with Obongo and the envirotards for that one. Once the Propane prices get high enough, it will get shipped by train. Crap. Thanks for the heads-up! I only use the LP for stove and dryer, generator and backup heat, thankfully. I've got tandem heating oil tanks in the basement for the furnace, (which I think are currently burning money, freaking heating oil prices)  and about two cords of wood currently.
Guess I should still call for the LP to be topped off, though. I use Lorden, they're pretty decent at maintaining their stock.

1. Reminds me of the 1970s, when Jimmy Carter was in charge. They kept the thermostat in my school set at 60 degrees.
2. Those who say NG cannot be turned off are wrong. Back in the 1990s there was an NG shortage on the east coast, and they turned off the gas to tens of thousands of customers in Maryland so that the gas pressure would be high enough in Washington, DC. |

In contrast my 2nd home (which I am currently renovating) is 160 years old, half ass insulated with new windows. The upstairs is shut off so I am only heating the main floor, 1200 sq feet. I turn the heat down when I leave to 55 and up to 62 when I am home for a few hours before bed a few nights a week. I can empty a 500 gallon (400 gallons of propane) in this weather in about 2 months. I just filled her up 2 weeks ago @ $2.24 a gallon + tax + delivery for a grand total of $1049 and change I really need to get this place finished and fucking sold..............
