I case you didn't know Armstrong has a heart which is much larger than any normal human heart, enabling him to win most races. Also, when he first started he lost every race because he thought he was the best, etc. etc. and didn't train and plan well despite his coach's urgings. He started kicking A after his bout with cancer. He saw his survival as a secong chance to use his skill and abilities to the fullest extenet. How many times has the US military saved France's ass? If not for us, they would still be doing the goose-step over there. They owe the US military more than they can ever re-pay for liberating them, and what is the thanks we get??  They refuse to stand with us over dictators like Sadam Hussein and Khaddafi in Libya. They refuse to back our resolutions, and they refuse us permission to fly through their airspace. What great allies they are. At least Great Britain hasn't forgotten.

But, let's throw out the generalizations about all French soldiers being pussies, shall we.

Has anyone else here read a book about Dien Bien Phu called (IIRC) "Hell in a very small place"?  The French soldiers involved in that debacle had major stones, and their version of LRP were some unbelievably brave sumbitches.

As always, the fault there was "management", if you will.  Their generals insisted on fighting the current war with the tactics from the last, regardless of availible information.  Sound familiar, anyone?

Their LRP dudes were out in the bush basically forever, no rotation, no R&R, no relief.  After defeat at the negotiating table (hmmm, think Rhodesia here) the teams in the field were totally abandoned, and were hunted down like dogs.  A final radio transmission from one team didn't ask for relief, or for extraction, just ammo so they could go out like men.  Pussies?  I think not.

Back to Dien Bien Phu in the closing days; the AA situation in that valley was horrific, yet there were still pilots doing supply drops under truly harrowing circumstances.  And, even though it was obvious to all that they were gonna get plastered, there were still French paratroops jumping into that hell hole (and it was a fucking postage stamp at that point) to assist their buddies.  The last command issued as they were being over-run was "fix bayonets, charge!"  Pussies? I think not.

I picked up that book thinking the usual "yeah, French, what a bunch of pansies", and put it down with a totally revised attitude.  Those dudes were studs.

Read the book!!!!!

It still amazes me that a third world country like Viet Nam can DEFEAT both the French and U.S. Management at it's finest.

It's been years since I read that book (and it's currently buried deep since the fiancee' moved in and started re-arranging my entire house).  My lame-ass old fogey memory remembered it as being Frence national forces and not Legion forces.  Point well taken.

Their generals were dumbfucks, and ours were too since they didn't learn a damn thing from the folks they were inheriting the situation from.  There was stellar achivement lower down the food chain though.  Hackworth, anyone?  I'd love to see that man get some influence over our current military infrastructure.  Heads would roll, eh?  Be fun to watch.
