It seems like lately the waitress are asking this question as a way of bumping people for tips.

It's been an annoyance (a question that should not be asked, in my mind, I always tip a little over 15%), but a recent incident almost cost me $10 extra.

The IHOP bill came to twenty something and I gave the waitress $40.00.   As she walked away, she asked if I wanted my change.   For a moment I forgot that the change was around $14, mistakenly thinking it was $4 - that I had given her $30 instead of $40.

I came to my senses as she had just given it all to the register woman, and so I went up there and explained to the cashier (who I think happened to also be the manager)  how yes I did want that extra $10 and no I didn't mean for the waitress to get it all.

At first I though it was an honest mistake, but later I wondered if she wasn't hoping I wouldn't notice.

What do you guys think -  have you had this happen to you?

I frequent a restaurant that had a waitress that would always ask if I wanted change.  I finally told her at the beginning of the meal that if she asked me if I wanted change she wouldn't get any tip (I'm a very generous tipper for good service in a sit-down type establishment).  That's the only problem I've ever had with people asking me if I wanted my change.  I mean, most people want their change unless they say otherwise, so don't fucking ask.  I just found it to be really rude when that girl did it to me.

Hey pal, you only make 2.13 an hour, what would you do?  I'd fault the girl FOR NOT asking, after all, she must care enough about herself to want to increase her income.  Hell, you shoulda kicked yourself in the face for making that mistake but going back and asking for your money back was in my opinion rude.

But who cares?  You know how much a restaraunt cocaine addiction costs?  Be a nice guy and buy her next fix.  Karma is always nice to have on your side.

"Hey, I'm very sorry that the government taxes their tips. That's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would appear that waitresses are just one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. You show me a paper says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it. Put it to a vote, I'll vote for it. But what I won't do is play ball. And this non-college bullshit you're giving me, I got two words for that: "Learn to fuckin type." Cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent, you're in for a big fuckin' surprise."

You did the right thing. You shouldn't be expected by ANYONE to leave a 50% tip. Honest mistake on your part, and an honest correction by IHOP was in order. Period.

"So, would you like change?"

"No, really, you keep it. I'd really like to pay 50% extra for my meal because you have a low paying job, and a lovely ass."

Yeah, I'd like my fuckin' change, and I'll decide what the service was worth, not you....thanks for asking though.

***And for the record I tip very well when it's deserved....which is often.***

For that kind of a tip you should get to give her some tip.

On a related note, my mother once forgot to total her credit card reciept at a restaurant (you know, the ones that have the line for a tip), and this after leaving a cash tip at the table. When she got her charge statements, she noticed that the charged amount was 5$ more than she wrote. Yup you guessed it. She called and found out the POS waiter wrote in another 5$ tip. This on a 15$ meal.

From the above referenced movie:

(Mr. Pink doesn't believe in tipping waitresses automatically)
Mr. Blue: Our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay, but she wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's something special? Take you out back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

I hate it when they ask if I want my change!  Yes I want my change!  Did I say "keep the change?".  Man that drives me nuts.  I always leave a good tip unless the service was horible.

I ate at Applebees a couple weeks back and the total came to like $25.  I paid with $100 and the girl asked if I wanted change.  You'd have to be a complete moron to thing that anyone is going to tip you $75 on a $25 ticket!

If you cant make a good living on tips then get a different job.  No one is forcing them to be there.  I'm sick of hearing, ohhh they only make $2 and hour.  BS!  My wife worked on tips and at the time sometimes made more in a shift then I do.

I just want to go into a restraunt, be promptly attended to by the waiter, waitress, have my order taken and drink filled.  Do it nicely, do it quickly and I will tip well.  If your more interested in the football game or flirting with the bar tender then you are obviously not interested in my money.  If they're not making money its because they SUCK!

The worst deal is at the nicer establishments, where if you have 5 or more people, they automatically add a 15% gratuity to the bill. Sometimes 20%. In every case I have seen this happen, the service was poor compared to the nights where there were just 4 of us. Socialism at it's best. If the know they're getting the tip no matter what, they don't give a crap.

I go out to eat by myself a lot and usually I sit at the bar.  a beer in the evenings is about 2.50 and change from a five is tip.  this get's their attention up front and a good bartender will go the extra mile for me like give me a menu without me having to ask, making sure I always have a beer and bring out the food while it's still hot.  sure they have 20 people but they know I am handing out 100% tips so they usually they have one eye on me.

I eat out often and generally try to leave 20% or better.

But I do have a rule. If I have to wait for a refill on my ice tea, it goes down to 15%. If it happens a second time, the tip is going to be a flat 10%.

For a third time, management is called.

There is nothing worse than ruining a perfectly good meal because of poor service.

If the service is good and the waitress is hot I'll leave 50% sometimes, if I'm in a good mood. Usually I leave about 25%. However, if you ask me if I want my change back you will get abso-fuckin-lutely nothing. If my service sucks, you will get abso-fuckin-lutely fucking nothing.

I got so pissed off once that I spelled out "TIP" real big on the table with french fries and dotted the "I" with a penny.

I almost always leave close to 20%, unless my service is just horrible. Average service will get 15% no problem. I really don't like the "Do you want change" question; a lot of restaurants tell their servers not to ask that, but many of the servers still do. It is one of those things I usually look past on good service and deduct when the service is poor.

One thing I do not do is judge my service on whether or not my glass was kept full (most of the time). I know when I go out to eat and order a coke (rare occurance, it is usually beer) I drink it at an unusually quick pace. Much of the time if the my glass were supposed to be filled every time it is empty, they would have to sit there with the drink machine next to me. I am a distance runner, so when there is fluid in front of me it is not there for very long.

I don't understand why a tip is a forgone conclusion these days.  Don't like making $2.50 and hour? Get another job.  I would think that if you wanted to earn more, you'd actually work harder.  Silly me.

What I've always wanted to do, but never had the nerve, is to go into a resaturant with a stack of quarters.  When the server came over and introduced themselves, I'd explain my tipping philosophy.  If you don't piss me off in any way, you'll get the whole stack of quarters, but everytime my glass gets empty, or if my food shows up cold, one or two quarters will dissapear from the pile.  I'm just afraid that if I actually did it, the food would arrive hot and the drinks on time, but each one would have a nice dose of spit (or worse) in it.

It's fucking rude, that's why. By your logic, I could ask you if you'd mind your wife giving me a blow job and you'd answer with a simple yes or no since it's not hurting anyone. I'd be expecting a punch in the mouth and if I'm a waiter and I ask the change question I should be expecting no tip.

It's completely understandable. If my local convenience store/service station attendant that actually still operates the pump and puts gas in my vehicle, ever stops washing my windshield everytime put in $1 worth of gas, I would get really pissed off too. And if I have to get out of my vehicle on a perfectly beautiful 72 degree day to point out a smudge she left on the windshield, I would call the manager to complain and ask to have her fired. How dare any minimum/subminimum wages employee treat me like that.  I make so much more than her minimum wage, I should be treated like a movie star. Nothing less is acceptable. Then I would demand the manager put a star with my name at the entrance to the convenience store as restitution.

If you believe that analogy is even close, you have no clue.  Asking the blow job question would be hurting someone, particularly the one who would ask that question,  Combine that with your oversensitivity to a simple question about a tip and I would say someone has way too much time on their hands.

Usually, I tip roughly 16.5% (double the tax). If they are too busy flirting with other customers, when my drink is empty or something, and my drink sits empty for a while, or I have to serve myself, then the tip drops, unless they make up for it somehow.

If its a buffet-- less than 15% since I have to serve myself.

If they "auto-tip" and claim its a bigger table: BULLSHIT! Sometimes they auto-tip up to 20%! The other day it was 18% at Uncle Julios! Sometimes, I will try not to pay this if the service was bad, depending on the circumstances. My tea remained empty A LOT the other day, I had to have them correct my order, etc., but I left the auto-tip since it wasn't worth the hassle. Think of it this way: they would have had to wait on you anyway! Pulling tables together still has the same number of tables in their section, and sometimes less people since they now hold 2 instead of 4, etc.

oh, and they should ALWAYS bring your change. Its part of the GOOD SERVICE. They should also bust the larger bills into smaller bills, to ensure they get the maximum tip. i.e. they bring a 10 and a 5. They could have had 8, but we leave the 5.

[:D] [:D] [:D] That is classic!

I will add a different view on server etiquette. My pet peeve.

You do not plop your lazy ass down at my table and proceed to take my order or ask me how I am. This can fly at dumps like Hooters but anywhere else this pisses me off to no end, especially with guys. Walk up, greet me, ask me what I would like, simple as that. Women think that setting down and being flirty will get them a bigger tip. Never mind concentrating on getting my order right. “If I wanted to sit down and eat with you I would have asked you on a date, now please stand up.”

Another reason why I hate places like Joe’s Crab Shack and TGI Fridays where the staff is a bunch of fucking teenage hippies who dance around like idiots and bug the ever-living shit out of you.

I always have a pen and I will grab a piece of paper and write a note WHY YOU ARE GETTING LESS THAN 20% or for really crapping servers It will get to the manager after I ask that he come to see me I will had him the note about the service or the food. I will let them read it a couple of times and will not say a word until they asked how can they make it right. I ask " Do you want me to come back ?" They will reply yes. I will then list out what will get me back.
If they say I cant do that. I will never go back and I will let them know.

The manager at Steak and Ale agreed our party of 10 had gotten very bad service and I informed him I was not going to be happy if I had to pay for my meal. He said OK that was fair they had let us down. Then I said NOBODY was paying for anything. He started to choke on that one I asked him to reread my note and see WE all had poor service. I was a hero to my family for the rest of the week.

Anywhere from 0 - 20%.

This also depends on the place.
White collar can be up to 50%.

I also don't appreciate the "do you want change" crap.
If I didn't I would rip off a change holder off of a Sonic girl and make exact payment each time to the penny.

Customer service is a lost art.

They have to earn their tip, those who do are duely rewarded.

Im gonna have to go with ponyboy on this one. There is a "fair window" of apology or restitution. Demanding a free meal for EVERYONE was over the line.

We just had crappy service at Claim Jumpers a week ago and the manager made the "Mistake" of coming over and asking how everything was. We unleashed on him... He offered us free desert... If you have ever eaten at CJ's you would know how HUGE their portions are. To me that was a 'good faith' gesture and we WILL go back.

Gotta understand we are all human and subject to making a screw up here and there. If you remember that logic, you will do fine.

My favorite place for shitty service is definately Fridays.

On a particularly horrible service day, my bro and I went in for lunch.  We order appetizers, which came cold (tater skins).  Drinks came 5 mins after the apps.  Then the meals came out and both were wrong.  I reordered, she said it'd be out in a minute.  When my burger came, it was charcoal.

We called the manager.  I told him what was happening and that I didn't plan on paying for a damn thing if I didn't get my burger, a refill and the nasty tater skins off my table NOW.

He told me that if I didn't pay, he would call the cops.  At that point I was fucking furious, so as he's walking away, I asked my bro if his meal was ok.  He pulls out a fucking fishbone from his potatos.

I call the manager over and tell him to give us the bill so we could go over it.  He comes back with the bill with both meals, neither of which we ate.  I told him to take the meals off.  He refused, then after telling him to call the cops, he agreed.  Then he argued that we didn't eat the skins while they were hot, so that's OUR fault.

BULLSHIT, when there's food in front of me, that I ordered, consider it eaten!  He took it off.  Then we tell him we didn't come in for two cokes, but we'd pay for them, because those were the only things keeping us from starving.

He brings the check over and THE FUCKING TIP WAS INCLUDED!!!  That cunt waitress was rude, nasty and did nothing for us.  On top of that, we were threatened with the cops! THEN THEY WANT A TIP!!!

We left EXACTLY what the two drinks were, plus the $.02 extra.  Then we wrote on the bills, "Friday's Supports Botulism" and we left.

Oh yes folks, there's more....he comes out into the parking lot after us, telling us we didn't pay the bill.  He DEMANDS the tip!  At this point, my brother moons him and we drive off.

FUCK FRIDAYS.

"I'll be right back with your change" is a MUCH better way for a server to respond, rather than asking if the customer wants change. If the customer wants you to have it, they'll tell you... lots of times, they'll give a larger tip than the change would have been (if it's not a huge ammount).

Let's reverse the scenario:

The total bill is $19.50, and we give him/her
a $20.00. Do you think he/she would ask us the
question: "Do you want your change back?"
View Quote

Whe I waited tables, I didn't even look at the totals until I went back to get change/close out the order... Do you really think the server counts the money, reads the bill and does a quick assesment of what's left to ask that question? Probably not.

Well, I waited tables for a few years in my late teens at Applebees... I'd say you're in the minority. As a waiter, your job is to be friendly and make the customer's experience a good one any way you can. This includes good service and a good/friendly attitude.

Now, I never actually sat down with customers (with exceptions to friends/family), but taking a knee so everyone's not craning their necks to look up and talk to you was usually part of the whole being friendly package.

Most of the time a server can tell if someone's a smug and unhappy person who doesn't want to be treated friendly and will back off... Just don't flip out cause you're one of the exceptions to the rule.

. Think of it this way: they would have had to wait on you anyway! Pulling tables together still has the same number of tables in their section, and sometimes less people since they now hold 2 instead of 4, etc.

A large table is much more of a pain to deal with than 2 or 3 regular tables. You have to deal with 10 people finishing drinks at the same time, all their food coming out together, etc... When it's 2 or 3 tables, they usually are several minutes apart, and is much easier to handle each table on time.

The worst deal is at the nicer establishments, where if you have 5 or more people, they automatically add a 15% gratuity to the bill. Sometimes 20%. [/quit]

Getting a large table where everyone wants to pay themselves can be a blessing or not, depending on the group. At AB's we didn't have a mandatory tip, and oftentimes a large table would each pay for their own meal, and NOBODY would leave a tip... I guess they thought someone else was. OTOH, some large tables you get a nice $1-2 tip from everyone and it's well worth your while.

Hope some of you "customers" picked up a few concepts here... now for the fun part.

If I get bad service, regardless of whether it's from the server, cook, hostess, etc... Flip over the ticket and write "Tip- you should/shouldn't do this or that". Gives them a chance to see what they did wrong, plus you can still decide whether to tip them $.02, or give them a full tip regardless (sometimes it's not the server's fault).

And yes, a $.02 tip is worse than no tip... it shows that you didn't just forget.

Karma is always nice to have on your side.

uhhh... no they're not.

If I got the smoking section waiting tables, it'd sometimes be over an hour before I had one table... I KNOW I didn't get 1/2 min wage in tips from the invisible man.

And yes, we had someone fired from AB's for staying clocked in at $5.25 an hour until he got a table (this guy did it several times before he was fired).

Waiters/waitresses are required by law to claim 8% of their total sales as tips, regardless of whether they made 1% or 50%. There's no way anyone but the server knows if they hit minimum wage... and the managers wont compensate you, believe me.

It's very, very rare that I had such bad service that the waiter didn't deserve a tip.  I can only think of once and that was when the waiter took our drink order and never came back to take our food order, even after asking the staff for help.  But that was by far the exception.   Giving somebody nothing means you would have been better off refilling your own drinks and getting your food from the kitchen yourself.  Most waiters I have dealt with earn their 15-20% tip.  Waiters are human, too, but I've rarely had problems.

TIPS ARE GIFTS.  THEY ARE NOT REQUIRED.
I do not necessarily tip, even if the service is GREAT!!!
I do not tip on drinks.

Scenerios
1. Why should 4 glasses of beer at $5 each cost me $3 in tips when ordering water (with 3 refills) costs $0 in tips?
2. Why should I pay $3 for my $20 steak when my buddy dining with me orders a $6 burger and tips $0.90????  It takes the same effort to bring out either entree.
I think $1 to $2 for a tip for the ENTIRE 4-person table is sufficient because, when they are busy they have many tables/hour and they are guaranteed $5.25/hour.

I also do not tip on tax, but then again, whatever I tip is a gift and MY CHOICE.

You sound like a great waiter. I don't mind the kneeling down, I do mind the sitting down. It probably depends most on the individual and the general level of instantanious annoyance I have for them.

For the brief period I eat, the table or booth belongs to me (and  guest(s)). It is probably my fault cause I did'nt wear my "I am smug and unhappy person who doesn't want to be treated friendly" baseball cap.
I really need a "fuck up my order and I'll shoot you in the knee" hat. [:D]

Seriously, would you like the cop to hop into your car when you get a speeding ticket? There is no need for the server to park ass at your table. Even if big melons are involved.

I work as a waitor also.
On Saturday nights, I pull in the money at an ungodly rate...

But it is hard work, and freaking stressful, because you have to do a thousand things at once, and look happy.

I NEVER ask if they want change. Ever.

I have been doing this for a while and I have found that the best tables are gay guys. I  really don't like them, but I hide it. They tip F'ING good. Lesbians tip like shit.
