IMHO Kaspersky is worth every penny. I got tired of rebuilding my computer after free virus program failures.

Ive gone away from AVG for the most part. Used an extra Norton subscription from work but it just ran out so now Im back to ?

I used AVG for a while until I found ESET Nod32. Have not had a computer virus in 5+ years that I've run it. The money saved on a free program isn't worth the hassle of reformatting the computer.

I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes Pro for residential customers. MSE is free and MWB Pro can be had for under $30 and no subscription fee. Commercial customers usually need to spend money on their security solutions so they can prove they reasonably tried to protect their data in case it is compromised.

The paid version of Malwarebytes is fantastic and will usually catch most things regular anti viruses miss. It's cheap.
If not, for free just use Microsoft Security Essentials. It won't really do much of anything with malware which is what the main problems usually are, so it doesn't matter. It will take care of minor things but thats about it. Couple that with the free version of Malwarebytes and it will handle most everything provided you scan with Malwarebytes often. If you are getting infected that often, I recommend finding a porn site that doesn't give you viruses. There are plenty. |

Just installed malwarebytes and Avast. will see how I like it for a while and maybe go back over to MSE but I kind of remember it being a pain with constant popup reminders and junk. I like background programs.

I don't know how great or effective it is, but what I have, with no viruses or malware in the last year or so, and only once in the last three is this.
1. Avast , free version 2. Malwarebytes 3.Spybot, search and destroy 4.WOT add on from Firefox ( Web of Trust, gives you a red or orange warning for bad sites , but tells you why without having to access the site. If it's something you don't mind ( violence, sex etc ), you can change the setting to a green circle, and you can set it up to avoid tagging those as unsafe. All I have as unsafe are non trustworhty, scam, virus realated) 5. Ghostery 6. Pop Up Blocker add on from Firefox 7. CCleaner |

Kaspersky is the best I've used when it came to pay programs, but it was a bit bloated and cause a problem or two on my laptop that came with it.
Never had good luck with McAfee or Norton. The free McAfee that is offered by AT&T DSL/Uverse missed one infection that took me hours to clean with ComboFix.  Still don't know how that machine got infected.
There really isn't one program that's best some are better than others. Some are bloated. The best suggestion is to run a layered approach. Currently using MS Security Essentials with Malwawarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. No problems so far in two years with that combo. Also use CCLeaner and Glary Utilities every week. Also keep the computer up to date with all of the Microsoft patches/updates. |
