Gunther--translated from German, it means warlord or god of war.

And you can call him "Gunny" for short.

My next GSD will likely be named Gunther.

Kraut names are big on war:

Gerold-- rules with spear

Gerard - hard spear

Faust- fist

Adolph - protector

Herwin - friend of army
Erick - all powerful

You get the picture

On the papers from the breeder my official gsd's name is Master Gunner (my last name) Excalibur.

There was time when he had chronic diarrhea I started to call him stripe (brown)

Wow, I was going to say Tiberius.

Adalwulf means "noble wolf" in German. Rudiger (Rudi for short), Blitz (lightning), Donner (thunder), Fritz etc. Is there a theme aside from German? Siegfried is the name from the hero of "Das Nibelungenlied", the medieval German epic.

How about regular 'ol names.

" Mike", or "Larry".

If he's a little smartass that insitigates trouble, "Vinny", or "Al".

Give him time, he will name himself. They all do.

Good lookin' Pup, that looks like he's settled in nicely.

Ya know you aren't getting any sleep for a couple days right?

Puppies and the hell they raise are always good fun. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Mongo- That's German, amirite?

I read a book by the monks of New Skete a long time ago. They raised and trained GSDs and recommended ending the name with a vowel. YMMV

I had a Basset who came named- Basel (Bazzle)

Personal preference here, but I never name our dogs a one syllable name. Commands are typically one syllable and they don't need to be confused.

That said our female GSD is named Bella. She doesn't know any commands that sound like her name so when she hears it she knows we're talking to her.
