I have on occasion watched a deer keep on walking while I patiently waited for him to fall over, only to realize I missed! 
Probably a tiny branch in the way you didn't see....

I stalked one for a mile once ,and in my final maneuvering to get around a mesquite tree that was between me and him, I was watching him and not looking and I tripped over an unseen rock and fell into a patch of cactus.

Hahah I'm 30. So no basement dwelling ....spooked him up on the way in, spent the next two hours taking the long way around to cut him off. I lucked out he was still in the middle of wood in between the bean fields. I missed because I rushed.
