I've seen a lot of AR pistols chambered in 5.56 without a buffer tube and just kind of accepted the fact that sometimes thats the way it is. One of my guys asked my where the bolt goes on the 5.56 ones and I honestly didn't have an answer. Educate me?

There are setups for AR pistols with an abbreviated buffer tube.  They use M1911 springs and a different bolt carrier.  But, they do have a buffer tube.

Now, a .22LR setup doesn't need the buffer tube, but a 5.56mm does.

I would like to see a 5.56 mm AR pistol without any buffer tube.  I don't believe such a beast exists.  I may be wrong, I thought I was wrong once before, but then I found out I was mistaken.

Obviously they don't have a big bolt carrier in there

Not standard bolts/carriers
A few different solutions

Piston style like aks
Compact buffer/carrier, etc
Etc

I've been pondering this same question.  Can you build a pistol AR without a buffer tube?

The Sig P556 looks like an AR, but it ain't an AR.
