Rochester, NY Three African-American teenagers arrested and charged with disorderly conduct last week believe they were unfairly targeted by police. The basketball players said they were waiting for a bus in Rochester, NY, to take them to a scrimmage when police asked them to leave the area. When 17-year-old Deaquon Carelock and 16-year-olds Raliek Redd and Wan’Tauhjs Weathers pushed back against the officer’s request, saying they were following instructions from their coach, police arrested them. “You’re just downtown minding your own business and the next thing you know, anything can happen,” Carelock said in video captured by NBC station WHEC. “We tried to tell them that we were waiting for the bus,” Weathers added. “We weren’t catching a city bus, we were catching a yellow bus. He didn’t care. He arrested us anyways.” Police say the teens were obstructing pedestrian traffic and repeatedly ignored orders to disperse, according to a police report obtained by FOX station WROC. Police had been keeping an eye on the area after receiving complaints of loitering from a nearby store. The students’ coach said he had no reason to think they were causing trouble. “My guys were waiting for the bus like they normally do,” Jacob Scott, the student’s basketball coach, said. “I get to the scene after parking my car and three of my guys are handcuffed.” At that point Scott says he tried to explain to the officer that the students were simply following his instructions to wait for the ride to their scrimmage, prompting the officer to tell him he too might be arrested if he didn’t leave the area. outcome............. |

This is bullshit, of course nobody worth a damn will give a shit.

Of course I believe the story Deaquon Carelock, Raliek Redd and Wan’Tauhjs Weathers told. I am sure they were in no way standing in such a way as to hamper pedestrian traffic or blocking the entrance to shops.

Interested in seeing what the cops side of the story is.
After all, there ARE two sides to every story. |

The fact the officers statement was left out speaks volumes.. My question is, what were they doing to draw the attention of the police in the first place. We're they making piggy sounds? Taunting with donuts? Or maybe being loud and obnoxious to others. But who cares. Only racism matters.

I dont find this surprising at all. Bus company build bus stops for its customers use. Someone else converts one for their own use and gets a ticket for it. How is this shocking?

Been there. Standing at a bus stop, wanting to catch a bus down to the repair shop. Big bus shelter, with "King County Metro" painted on it, a bus stop sign with bus info on it, and painted on the road in front of me: "Transit Only".
Cop drives by, turns around, comes back, stops in the " transit only" lane, gets out of his car, says "Good afternoon", and I gave a generic "Afternoon" reply, nodding my head, and was surprised when he asks "Waiting for a bus?" It all went downhill from there as, apparently, busting out in laughter was a no no. I'm guessing dude had trouble with the detective exam. |

Athletic teens with lots of energy "doing nothing" can seem pretty disruptive to old folks.
If they had a ball and were messing around while waiting I could see two valid points of view on this.

As a general rule, when the cops say one thing and then do something which makes me question what they said (in this case, arresting the teens and then dropping charges) I'm inclined to think "wow, the cops fucked that one up, somehow." ETA: I'm also inclined to feel the same way when a group of folks say "mah bebe didn't do nuffin" and the actors are later tried and found guilty of the "nuffin" they "didn't do." It's a two way street. |
