Yeh, saw a picture or two here but it didn't register anything.
Now my wife brought one home and is trying to find the proper spot for it. Yes, I live a sheltered life.

this must be a new thing. I'm almost 30 and i had NEVER heard of this "tradition" till maybe a year or 2 ago.

Actually, we had these when I was a kid (early 1970's). We would just put them around the house and make them play army man games with us in the backyard. I think my mom got them sometime in the late 1960's.

We had those when I was a kid in the '70s too, but they were just used as decorations. A friend of mine from college actually burned down his house with one when he was little. He hung it on one of those big, hot, old-fashioned Christmas tree lights. The tree, presents, and the rest of the house went up in flames.

My brother does Elk on the Shelf... a little toy elk that is hidden so when his son wakes up, he searches for it then finally shoots with a nerf gun.
