So - I get about 18-20, generally. I'm not crying about it - too hard.

I am wondering if I can get one of those whiz bang computers that the kids use to 'roll coal' - to dial back my performance. I pull with it fairly often, but it would be nice to slim things down when I am running empty.

Guys - I'm sure I can shave 1-3mpg with bolt-ons, but, since I don't race at stoplights and generally accelerate slowly - a mod to the engine control system, in the negative, may be in order.

If I can save a little dough - I'll be happy

Do you live in Davidson county or one that touches it?

If so, you will have to have emissions tests.  That will throw a wrench in your diabolical plan.

eta: that is if you have a newer model and rip off the dpf erg etc

eta2: unless your gvwr is over 13.5k i believe

No one loves you.

Cummins is perhaps the most fuel efficient.  Six cylinders and all.

OP.  My 06 duramax averages 17.  I have a tuner and a lead foot.  Sounds like you are doing pretty good right now.

If not worried about warranty EFIlive tune 40-80HP range and it will get better MPG if you can stop mashing the giggle lever down so far.

Straight pipe.
My friend has 270k miles with that. No problems other than balljoints bearins and alternator. Gets around 17-19 hwy.

A tune, exhaust with downpipe, and intake will help a little.  My highway mileage didn't budge much when I did all that to my Duramax, but my combined did a little bit better.

There's not anything you can do that actually will pay itself back at any point, though.

This.  Don't waste money on any tuner.  EFI is cheaper and much better than any "canned" tuner out there.

You will need to get rid of your DPF, though.  I deleted mine at 36k and couldn't be happier.

Ditching the DPF, blocking the egr, open up the exhaust and put a EFI tune in it with lots of timing at the highway cruse RPM and you might see 22-24.  I've never seen anyone get a hand calculated 25mpg in a dmax.  Can it happen.....?

I had a bully dog on my '06 LBZ.  Set on the "middle" setting.  Tow/haul I think.

Anyways, got around 17-18 in town, 20-21 hwy. It was 1-2 mpg better when I had Michelin LTX A/T2s on it.  The BFG ATs killed the mileage.

I would be thrilled with that. I actually increased 1 mpg with the efi/exhaust. Bigger tires are probably costing me at least 2mpg.

ZERO cost way to increase miles per tank, do air up the tires to max recommended for the vehicle, but the biggest is pay attention to what is going on down the road.  See a red light, get off the gas and coast.  Why waste gas to get to where your going to have to sit and idle anyway.  If you drive a fairly routine route, pay attention to what normal traffic is like.  There are sections on my trip, it's a guarantee, I will not make the light.  I go into coast or extremely light gas mode.  Guy behind me thinks I'm going to slow.. eh, he can pass, I'll see him at the red light in a bit.

It takes being conscious about it in the beginning but I have reduced my fuel consumption 13-17% doing this.  If I was a bumper sticker guy, I'd get one that said "see you at the next red light in a minute or so".  This method works with any vehicle.

ETA:  If you have to use your brakes, you wasted gas.  I so laugh at the people in bumper to bumper to traffic that think they have to stay three feet off the guy in front of them. They (should) know they are not going to go anywhere, but they slam the gas as soon as the brake lights go off in front of them, then slam on the brakes a split second later to keep the three foot gap.

A tuner.

Folks swear on the Bible that after their tune, they easily get 32-35 MPG towing 18k lbs up Pikes Peak.

ETA:  Oh nevermind.  You have a duramax,  That only applies to Cummins.

If that is actually hand calculated, you are doing very well.  Might be able to pick up 1-2 by deleting the DPF or EGR, opening up the exhaust, and getting an economy tune via EFI live.  I see all these people claiming 25 plus mpg from their full size diesels and laugh.  They are full of shit.
