Guys,

A homie of mine up in VT is doing me a solid....and I'd like to get him a shotgun. A good home defense shotgun.

He's a good dude and I don't want to go cheap, but I'm not looking to go above about $600.

Remington and Mossberg are the two brands I've looked at....but there are too many choices.

The only thing I'm sure of is I'd like it to have the 18.5" barrel.

Any advice or recommendations?

my 590A1 is tits. However it is heavy as fuck.

A 500 or 870 in any flavor you want will serve  him well.

Go cheap and tactical the fuck out of it.

Maverick 88, flash light, laser, scope, magnifier, collapsible stock. Paint it green.

But seriously, go with the JIC from mossberg, throw a nice light on it, and maybe the magpul furniture.

500 or 590a1.

I want a 590a1 badly.

The 500 is a lot cheaper though! Maybe throw in some ammo with a 500?

I am very close to picking up a 930 spx Blackwater edition.

Good ergo, great sites and holds 7.

I've owned a few pumps and operate them alright, but I'd hate to shortstroke one under stress.

I am in the camp that believes other options are superior for home defense.

I'm a Remington man when it comes to shotguns.  That's what I grew up with and that's what I know like the back of my hand.

870 or an auto like an 1187 or 1100 would be fine.

And get him some of that Federal Low Recoil Flight Control 00 buckshot to load it with.

I can't say enough good things about my 930 SPX.  But being a mossberg, QC varies.  No canted sights and it cycles/feeds everything Ive put in it.  Neighbors has canted front sight (just ever so slight) and won't reliably cycle low brass.

My S12 used to be my favorite (fair amount of work and it absolutely eats everything) but I find myself grabbing the SPX whenever we go shoot shotgun.

If your budget is ~$600, you could put him together a "lower end" AR pretty easily from a kit.

The 3 gun guys seem to like the Mossberg 930 quite a bit.  I'd get that for a HD gun over an arm flailer.

870 for ~$350-380, a $7 uncle mike's elastic stock shell holder, then buy him a bunch of cheap #7, some 00 buck and a couple boxes of slugs. Should be doable for under $450.

Interstate Arms 982 Hawk.  Chinese clone of the 870.  Very good shotgun for about $200-$229

I think a shotgun can be the perfect gun for home defense in certain situations.

Get a used 870P with the wood furniture.

Remington 887 "tactical" for the win.

Pump, weather resistant, screw in choke tubes, hi vi front sight, rail on receiver if you want a dot, extended tube,  easy to mount a sling, forward rail section, and takes 3.5's so you can kill a goose if you want to.  (comes with a plug for duck season too)

What's not to like?  (other than it's ugly)

For $500-600 you could get him a lower end AR(Much better for HD than a birdgun).

AIM has them from time to time. I bought three a year or so ago from them. When I give someone a shot gun, the 1201FP is what I give.

I have a 590A1 Blackwater edition and a 930 SPX Blackwater edition.  They're fun to shoot and I've had no problems.  My wife really enjoys to 930 and it's pretty much become her gun.  I use my pistol AR for home defense.  It's more maneuverable and holds more ammo.  You can build a good AR setup for the specified amount, but if he's not into firearms I can see why you would want to get him a shotgun to start.  What kind of solid is doing for you to want to drop $500, or is this a SSS situation?

That's not an extended magazine.  It's the 20" barrel compared to the 18" barrel in the link.  The only benefit being that you can mount a bayonet on the 20"

Besides the 870 and the 500, there are another couple of good shotguns that just don't have as much in the way of mall ninja stuff available.

Ithaca 37 Defense:

Downward eject and steel like an 870

Winchester 1200 Defender:

Aluminum like a 500, but faster to cycle due to action unlock

My buddy's gets a shell stuck every outing.  He has to hold the fore end and slam the buttstock on something to open the action.

While I am in the rifle HD camp, a shotgun still isn't terrible, especially for a buddy, and also for avoiding any weird state bans on rifles.

The other great thing, is a shotty as a gift doesn't have to break the bank to be a meaningful and useful gift.

870's and 590's are great, Mav 88's were the go to affordable shotgun for a long time.

The new Chinese ones are nice if a little rough around the edges, as well as the RIA M5, which I really like.

I also agree with what others said, that a Semi auto is the way to go.  Less manual of arms, easier to operate, not having to worry about short stroking.

Just load it, stow it, if needed bust it out come off safe when ready and get to business.
