Is it proper protocol ( etiquette)  to tip the owner of a barber shop, or just his employees.

Someone told me it wasn't, and I think that's correct.

What's the deal?

do you tip the manager at the restaurant or just your waiter/waitress

I only the tip the girl that cuts my hair, but she is the owner.  But the other poster is right, only tip the barber. Not the owner.

You tip the person who cut your hair, regardless of status in shop.

Did he cut your hair?  Then sure.

Slap him a fiver on the way out the door?  No.

I guess I should have been more specific............Is it necessary to tip the owner, if the owner cuts your hair.

Tips are for good service, not as an income supplement. If he did a good job, tip him like you would any barber.

So, if it's a one man operation, fuck you, no tip?

I went to an old timey barbershop in town once.  It was awesome.  Bunch of men's magazines around, got to sit in a chair older than me and the old timer barber combined, got my neck with the straight razor.  I need to go back one of these days.

It was $12.  I gave him $20 and said I wanted $4 back.  It was 10x the experience Great Clips was for the same money.

Yes.  I goto a one man shop and tip well since he is a local non chain small business.  Since its the holiday season, drop off a gift basket if its a larger shop.

You can tip anyone you damn well please.  If you are happy with their service or establishment and want to show it, slip em a few bucks and tell them.  I have tipped waiters, waitresses, have sent tips to the cook that prepared my meal to perfection, hostesses, owners, all kinds of people.  If they provide an over the top experience then they deserve to be recognized.  In our capitalist society, money is the great recognizer.

Tip whoever you damn well please.

At a salon you are never supposed to tip the owner.

At a barbershop I suppose do whatever you want.

A 33% tip isn't enough?

I used to work in a tip based job.  I'll pretty much always throw down a couple more bucks than society says I need to.

Well shit, I texted a friend of mine whose dad had a barber shop in town for probably 60 something years, and he said, "no way, the old time folks would be really insulted if you knew they were the owner and gave them a tip. It would be more like charity and saying your business probably doesn't do very well."

I wish my hair were in sufficient quantity on top to require the services of a barber. I'm not bald, but thinning enough that it looks better to DIY with no-guard clippers every couple weeks. I never get a tip for that chore.

At the Supercuts I've been regularly going to, I either give them a couple bucks or they have it factored into the point-of-sale machine.

Why? They're close to the house and I can get it done relatively quickly.

Growing up in Brooklyn & dealing with old Italian barbers,  I was taught that you never tip the owner, Even if he is the one that cuts your hair, if you tip him you are insulting his ability to make a living, Probably some idea that they carried over from the old country!

I own a five chair barber shop. I have four guys that cut in the shop 5 days a week, and I cut only on Saturday. I have a full time job outside of the shop that I work at on weekdays. It is a true old school barber shop. We have black and white checkered floors and 80 year old barber chairs. The shop has been around since 1881. We charge $12 per cut, and most people tip anywhere from $1 to $5. Most of the regulars know I own the shop and they tip me regardless. I have never had anyone tell me I am not getting a tip because I am the owner. I would say about 90% of our customers tip. None of us expect to be tipped, but we all sure do appreciate it.

Thanks for the help boys.

Went back and tipped the owner and asked his opinion on the matter. He basically said it's appreciated but not expected... like the advise of the overwhelming # of reply's here.

Yet another GD happy ending

No it isn't. Whoever told the OP that you don't tip the owner is correct. Normally he gets a piece of every haircut. It gets weird when the barber just pays rent and keeps all of the price of the cut. That's different and also less common.

No.
Normally, a barber rents the chair from the owner for a set amount for the week/month and the barber keeps the proceeds, regardless of how much or little he makes.
You tip the person who provides you a service.
