I have seen one this year.  I don't go to malls and such very often but I have only heard a solitary bell.

Plenty down here. In front of every store it seems. Probably because the weather is nice right now. I bet there will be less once it   dips down to the 50's.

No need for bell ringers.

All over the place here. Saw a guy I know that had his two teenage sons standing in front of the grocery store ringing away, even had sheet music in front of them and the dad was walking around on the phone. I walked by and asked the boys if they were having fun, there was murder in their eyes :)

Revenue has to be down with people not carrying cash and change like they used to. Surprised they don't have the cashiers asking if you want to donate a dollar at checkout like all the other XYZ charities do at different times.

The only one I've seen was in front of the state liquor store.  I've been to Wal-Mart and K-Mart within the past week and haven't seen them there.

No use checking Target who gave them the ban hammer a few years ago.

I used to do it every year with my local gun club.
The last few 5 years or so, my milk of human kindness has curdled so I don't volunteer anymore.

There was one in front of our local walmart-probably a 50-60 year old guys with an AMAZING voice singing Christmas carols.  Some people were loitering just to hear him sing.
It was very nice to experience considering all the assbaggery going on lately.

Same here.

I don't mind them, the SA does a pretty good job with their finances.

I'll usually toss in a couple of bucks.

Not so many in my area as in the past.

I suspect that they get robbed too often for many stores in large swaths of Maryland, the District, and Northern Virginia to permit them.

This is a liberal area politically, so not as many people will be donating to a private / religious charity to begin with. Such an activity only angers the liberals since it implies that the Government isn't needed or doing enough.

There are some very sketchy looking bell ringers nowadays also: no uniform, looking like someone that was just released from a correctional or rehab facility, and innumerable news reports of donations going straight into the bell ringer's pocket.

On a related note, are they legit?  We always do toys for tots and that is thought the Salvation Army, but have never just given cash.

If they swapped them out for a machine that stops making annoying racket for a set amount of time per dollar donated, they'd probably triple their donations.
